what an eventful day i had yesterday for all the wrong reasons !!

why cant people control their dogs :wallbash: i had taken my girls for a walk after work yesterday onto the fields where the farmer has allowed the public right of way on paths he has made and we were really enjoying ourselves :)

when i decided to let isla off for a while and she was minding her own business when around the corner a long legged jack russell appears, i wasnt worried as isla was far too interested in what she had found in the hedgerow so thought we could walk on without any problem

how wrong was i !! the jr wouldnt leave my girls alone and angel who was on the lead had already told it in no uncertain terms she wasnt interested so i asked the owner to call her dog away which she couldnt do :dntknw: so it went over to isla to be honest what happened next im not really sure as it all happened so quickly but the next thing i heard was isla screaming like someone had just tried to kill her it took me half an hour to catch her and when i eventually realised what had happened the women had gone :(

anyway she had been bitten which at the time didnt look too bad but i thought i had better take her to the vet and im glad i did the dog had ripped the muscle off the bone so she now has a drain in and lots of stiches and im £187 pounds lighter (although my insurance will pay most of it )

im so angry why do people have dogs that are clearly out of control off the lead ?? i doubt very much this was the first time it had done something like this and certainly wont be the last either

anyway on the plus side she has been an absolute star and has not complained about having to wear her lampshade even though my legs are a lovely shade of black and blue where she keeps banging into me

it really makes me feel i should just keep my girls at home safe in the garden where i know they will be safe but i know i cant honestly some bloody people !!

sorry for ranting but i do feel better today believe it or not and isla will on friday as she is on cage rest till then and then the drain will come out thank god

my poor wounded soldier :(

I am so sorry this has happened Kelly, must of been a horrible little  jr to do that to a puppy

if i had a dog that was a bit iffy i certainly wouldn't let it off the lead with other dogs around ffs

i hope she heals quickly and it hasn't done to much damage mentally,

lots of hugs to isla

I want to swear, but it's a public forum so I know I can't

Poor little Isla - she must be so sore and it would have been terrifying for her!!!!

I know exactly what you mean about keeping them at home. Even with the empty farmland I have to walk on, I have to pass other houses with doggy residents and, for some reason, whippets always seem to incite riot amongst others  I never feel 100% relaxed about it :(

So glad you took Isla to the vet and got it sorted, it looks neat and I'm sure it will heal up beautifully. Good luck and stay safe :luck: :luck:

omg!!! kelly thats awfull, poor isla :(

some people will just never learn

i hope isla recovers well, it does look sore :(

:huggles: :huggles:

omg thats shocking :( poor isla ,hope shes not too traumatised , god love her :(

sending healing thoughts her way :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

god, so sorry, what a horrible experience :( and poor Isla, what a brave girl, hope it heals well for her :luck: :luck: :luck:

not to offend anyone, but border collies and jack russels I never trust.

That is such a shame. There are so many nasty dogs about. Pity you couldn't find the woman and show her just what damage her dog has done!

if it didnt take me so long to catch isla i would have done believe me i just hope i see her again

Why is it whippets seem to attract iffy dogs, it has happened to mine so many times, thankfully not ending up like poor Isla. We have had bruising and a couple of minor puncture wounds. It is no longer pleasant walking as I am always on edge if I see another dog off the lead. Tend to turn round and go the other way. Mostly I go at lunch time, we don't see many people then.

Your poor little whippet, they tear so easily, I hope it heals well and she can have the awful 'bucket' off.

Not all JRT's are bad news. From the description of the dog that attacked Isla it was not a JRT but a Parson Russell Terrier. JRT's do not have long legs, they have stumpy little legs as they were originally a cross between a Parson Russell Terrier and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Being an owner of a JRT he is one of the friendliest dogs you could care to meet, and no I'm not taking the hump.

Since having Rebus I have met some lovely JRT's and also some awful ones. There is one deciding factor the lovely one are the ones were owners have taken the time and trouble to train them. That though can be said of any breed. There is no excuse to have a nasty JRT as they are extremely intelligent and one of the easiest dogs to train.

However I can understand why they have a bad press, as with any breed it only takes a few to spoil it for the many.

There seem to be more and more irresponsible dog owners out there and we all seem to have the misfortune of coming across them with our whippets!

Poor Isla - that looks so painful and sore. I do hope that she is feeling less tender very soon.

Diego was badly bitten on his face by a JRT - he has a big dark scar on his muzzle, which I doubt will ever go. The incident sounds very similar to that which you described with Isla. Fortunately I have never seen the little horror again.

bloody hell Kelly, poor little girl :(

she will soon mend :luck: :luck:

we have 2 staffs up the road from me, so far they have killed a cat, attacked another and took a chunck out of a collie....police wont do anything

probaly have to wait till they kill a person

 ann thats exactly what my vet said why is it always these types of dog that attract the trouble  i wish i knew i suppose its because they are just so inoffensive other dogs cant work them out i did mean to add not all jr are like this this was definately a parson jr not a shorter version i just guess its down to the owners all i know is i would be devestated if any of my dogs behaved in such a manner :( but i guess thats just me having owned a staffy who was an absloute gem i can see how frustrated people must feel when they hear about another attack by their breed i certainly do not blame the dog just the irresponsible owner

oh kel..that is awful...poor isla...sending hugs to you both :huggles:

I personally have nothing against BCs and JRs, but in my experience they are often owned by people who have no idea what they have on their hands.

I think the problem with small hunting terriers is that a lot of people who get them think of them as lap dogs - they're small, they're cute, they get spoilt rotten, they start showing aggression, since effectively are allowed to rule the roost and the owners just say ''oh, he's a bit feisty'' when effectively they were bred to do a good job and are still very much capable of it.

but then that's my theory - there wouldn't be as many problems in the dog world if people did they research before getting a dog. though, of course, the bottom line is - just have some responsibility.

Poor poor Isla (she is quite my favourite dog on k9  ) ( sorry Alfie up in Perthshire :) ) She looks so like my beloved Peat.

I am so sorry for her, she must have been so terrified for you to have problems catching her. I hope that she gets over the experience and heals well.

What an awful ordeal. It is just as well you got her to the vets quickly as the wound will heal better.

What about the old pair of tights idea that go over the wound to stop pulling at stitches (once the drain is out). It may be more comfortable for all.

Things like Isla being attacked are becomming all to frequent

My whippies really dislike Boxers for some reason and would charge at them if they were given the chance. I cannot understand it. I like Boxers, they are lovely friendly dogs. I always walk my dogs where I can see what is comming and call them back as soon as I see a Boxer.

Why can't people be more responsible surely they must be aware of their dogs behaviour around other dogs

Poor Isla - I know exactly what you mean about irresponsible dog owners. We have a Akita pup near us, it's about the same age as my two - but massive of course. The owners let it run riot, it hasn't done any damage yet - but that's probably because it's still a puppy. But it really is a ticking time bomb. We're very lucky to have a fenced off dog exercise area in our local park, was in there the last couple of mornings - on Monday there was a young lad in with a Staffy - I was a bit wary, but he assured me it was fine with other dogs so we went it. It was no bother and pretty much kept to itself, the owner told be how earlier on a woman came in with a JRT and like me asked if his Staff was ok with other dogs. He said yes, the woman ket her JRT off the lead and it proceeded to go for the Staffy. She put him back on his lead and left. The next day I was there with my two again and the only person in was this woman with her JRT - which didn't attack my dogs but was very growly, snappy and grumpy. Half an hour later the young lad with the Staffy came back and the woman told me how that Staffy had attacked her dog the previous day! Within 5 mins of the Staffy coming in, her JRT had another go at it - and the Staffy had a go back. I wasn't there the first time, but having seen both of the dogs in isolation and how they were with mine, I'd say her JRT was the instigator on the previous day too - and unlike mine who just joked around and then ran off, the Staffy snapped back. I'm not a fan of Staffys in fact I'm quite scared of them - but I felt quite sorry for this one, as if any damage had been done to the JRT - the Staffy would have been instantly guilty - because of the breed's reputation - yet it was a snappy, yappy badly trained JRT that kicked the whole thing off.

I think Noise is right collies and JRTs are great dogs in the right hands but too many people let JRTs in particular get out of hand because they think they are cute lap dogs instead of seeing them as the somewhat boisterous, highly intelligent hunting dogs they are.

What a terrible thing to happen to your poor girl . :huggles:

Dog walkers are often creatures of habit and I would be looking for the dogs owner and showing her the photos of Isla and telling her exactly what her dog did :(

Poor, poor Isla :( And poor you too, its a really nasty shock when something like that happens

We have had more than our share of run ins with aggressive dogs, my poor Billy has the scars to show the story :(

Hope Isla recovers quickly, and sorry to the terrier people, but they can be horrid little dogs in the wrong hands
