Our two new additions, Harry (opal colouring - a smoky blue) and Cheddar McCheese (normal agouti colouring)! Sorry, the children named them! :b

They are such dear little things, very relaxed and confident, really easy to handle, we are in love with them already! :huggles:

Here's little Harry, a bit smaller, so either a runt, or maybe there were two different litters in together.

awwwww i used to have russian hamsters when i was younger

The only worry is that Harry has a slightly closed up eye. :( He is eating, drinking, grooming normally etc, and I have phoned Pets at Home to tell them and they advised gentle bathing with plain water for 24 hours, but if it is getting sticky to phone them and they will ask their vet to prescribe some eye drops. I was impressed with this as I was worried they would just say to bring him in and swap him for a new one, and then I would have been worried that he would have been knocked on the head as they wouldn't have wanted to pay vet fees for him, but I think they have acted well.

Now all I've got to do is bathe his eye - which should be interesting! :p

When i was little about 8 we got some russian hamsters and we got them from pets at home and we got 2 one for me and one for my brother, two boys they told us. Couple of weeks later my mum was cleaning out the cage coz i had my friend over and cat jumps on the side where my mum cleaning cage and knocks cage on floor and loadsa red things everywhere and my mum screamed and me and my mate like whatt! and there were 8 babies! 10 including mum and dad. so yes, my mum told me to get books on hamsters from school and so we could scan the pages  and my brother knew how to tell whch sex was which so we made him sort them! when they were old enough. we gave 4 to the petshop and kept 2 and the other two were eat :( and i got to keep a baby girl and mummy in a sperate cage and my brother had a baby boy and daddy. They are so cute! but be warned if you get some from pets at home

Certainly Syrian hamsters are solitary and will fight to the death if left together as adults, but Russian hamsters are sociable and live in family groups so it is fine to keep a pair together. They assured me that they were both male, but I will have another look tonight! (w00t)

Update on our Russian dwarfs! Well, Cheddar McCheese and Harry got on initially, but Cheddar started bullying poor Harry so much and gave him a few nasty bites, so we had to separate them and get another cage.

They are both really sweet and so easy to handle, and we are really fond of them. They have both grown a bit, but are still really mini!

Here's Cheddar

They look really sweet and tame.

The one we had a few years ago was like a pirhana. It used to bite every time we put our hands anywhere near it. You would try and gently scoop it up and end up with it dangling from your finger (w00t) The pet shop ended up taking it back and giving us a golden hamster instead, we called him Goldie and he was a little angel. I cried my eyes out when I had to take him to the vet to be pts, as he had a tumour on his eye :(
