Kelpie my 11 week whippet X is a sweetheart most of the day apart from the usual puppy stuff - chewing on stuff and nipping but we just redirect his attentions to something he is allowed to chew & bite and everyone's happy. We have a short walk just after 6pm and he usually has a nap aftwerwards. But from about 8pm to 9pm he goes beserk - blasting around the garden at warp factor 8 (I am scared he hurts himself. Honestly - he is a flurry of legs, a whirlwind who just seems to miss hitting walls and garden furniture by millimetres), barks, jumps, nips and bites and is just so excitable almost to the point of being aggressive. Firm NOs, especially from my kids who get nipped and jumped on the most (age 9 and 11) just seem to make him even more agitated. He never directs any of his jumping or biting at me. Nobody is winding him up or playing roughly with him. Not sure if this is attention seeking at a time when the household is winding down for the evening or just an energy let off before bed. By 10.30pm he takes himself away to his crate and is out for the count until about 4.30am when he needs out.

Is he acting normally? Do I ignore him during these periods or leave him outside until he calms down? Do I get tough on him? I don't want an over excitable adult but he is only 11 weeks and I'm loathe to resort to anything more than a loud NO! I haven't involved my kids in his training which is maybe why he directs his excitement at them. He sits, lies down and comes to me without any fuss but I wasn't sure if involving my kids would confuse him or he might get bored if they make him perform and he stops responding to me.

It's been many years since I last had a pup and perhaps I've forgotten the crazy behaviour of our last dog - an English Setter who was such a refined old gent but must have had his puppy moments.

Any suggestions or reassurances welcomed.

Hi there yep that sounds about normal   he is prob just trying his luck with you am afraid. I would defo involve your kids in his training. If he is getting a bit too over excited then you need to calm him down just incase he does hurt himself. All dogs have a mad hour (w00t) (w00t) . Kelpie is trying to find his way into the pack, youll been seen as the alpha male so you may need to use a frim NO now and again just so he knows his place in the pack if you catch my drift  . But its good that he takes himself off to bed. Am sure he is going through the mad puppy phase and will settle down in time. Get your kids involved in as much of his up bringing and training aswell, that way they are learning and so is Kelpie.

GOOD :luck: his dad sends him kisses

My first thought there would be what is he having for his tea? that maybe whats making him so hyper and if its just at that time of day.

Or it could just be he's recharged his batteries after his nap

Also as neave says he could just be seeing the kids as someone to get away with it with they need to let him know he is below them in the pecking order

I'm sure he'll calm down as he grows :luck:

our finley was just like that until he was about 4 months old,i think its excess energy they need to burn off,we use to play with him for a good hour each night starting around 8pm,but once he had had enough that was it he would want his supper then striaght to bed and not a mumour until morning.

they do grow out of it promise

Thanks again folks - I can hardly believe we've had him for 4 weeks already! Despite my minor concerns about his nocturnal energy he has been a lovely wee pup to have. Yesterday we were celebrating my daughter's 9th birthday so it was a real family day. Looking out on the lunar landscape that used to be the garden (my wife's pride and joy) and seeing him padding around very happily with his tail wagging and a rubber chicken in his mouth we all realised he was definitely one of the clan and here to stay.

How come your bed still looks 'made'. Mine looks like a volcanoe has erupted and it's only Angel who is allowed up there!!!
