Kelpie my 11 week whippet X is a sweetheart most of the day apart from the usual puppy stuff - chewing on stuff and nipping but we just redirect his attentions to something he is allowed to chew & bite and everyone's happy. We have a short walk just after 6pm and he usually has a nap aftwerwards. But from about 8pm to 9pm he goes beserk - blasting around the garden at warp factor 8 (I am scared he hurts himself. Honestly - he is a flurry of legs, a whirlwind who just seems to miss hitting walls and garden furniture by millimetres), barks, jumps, nips and bites and is just so excitable almost to the point of being aggressive. Firm NOs, especially from my kids who get nipped and jumped on the most (age 9 and 11) just seem to make him even more agitated. He never directs any of his jumping or biting at me. Nobody is winding him up or playing roughly with him. Not sure if this is attention seeking at a time when the household is winding down for the evening or just an energy let off before bed. By 10.30pm he takes himself away to his crate and is out for the count until about 4.30am when he needs out.
Is he acting normally? Do I ignore him during these periods or leave him outside until he calms down? Do I get tough on him? I don't want an over excitable adult but he is only 11 weeks and I'm loathe to resort to anything more than a loud NO! I haven't involved my kids in his training which is maybe why he directs his excitement at them. He sits, lies down and comes to me without any fuss but I wasn't sure if involving my kids would confuse him or he might get bored if they make him perform and he stops responding to me.
It's been many years since I last had a pup and perhaps I've forgotten the crazy behaviour of our last dog - an English Setter who was such a refined old gent but must have had his puppy moments.
Any suggestions or reassurances welcomed.
