Apart from amylase - as I understand it, wolves dont produce this but dogs do; which is why dogs can digest starches that wolves can't.

Agreed - that's why I said 'aren't that different' - yes, unlike wolves, dogs are able to digest starch, so they are more efficient scavengers. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they need starches, or even that starches are particularly good for them. More here: Wolves, Dogs, Differ in Ability to Digest Starches - Whole Dog Journal

OP - you will find some raw feeders are rather evangelical and purist... as in if you give your dog one piece of kibble it will get cancer, and the only reason vets tell you to feed kibble is so that your dog will become ill and they can treat it at your expense. As always, beware of BS from both sides.

@JudyN - my feeling is that starches, though tolerated, as you say, aren’t great in abundance, and there’s often a lot of starch in dry food.

I was thinking about the vet records thing. I never had a problem with transferring vet records. We bought an adult retriever locally, the records were transferred no problem. And record transfer is something vets do every day. It might be worth trying to pin your vet down on why this isn’t happening. Or having a good scout around the internet about why vet records won’t be released. Have you got some kind of document proving ownership, I think this would be very important. With Perdie, I had a signed receipt, and I know the previous owners would have contacted the vets if needbe and authorised release, as they wanted the best for their dog. Yhey were rehoming her because they couldn’t devote the time needed fir exercise for her, and making a very tough decision.

Without previous owners permission the vets would not be able to release information which would make me suspicious as to why ....

thanks for your reply , when we bought the dog his name was mr don king , his kennel club name is king rocco one for the ladies , we have changed his name to rocco , now the problem we have at the moment is down to gdpr as the old owners have not contacted old vets to say they no longer have the dog and also the old vets will not pass on any info about the history of the dog , we have got all his paper work from microchip central , kennel club , petlog transfered into our name and we have proof of this , i have told the old and new vets that we are concerned over the welfare of the dog as we have no history , according to the www gdpr does not involve pets history info only people according to vets it does as i have said we are concerned over rocco and now unsure where to go from here, yes we are wondering why old owners have not told old vets of change of ownership, i spoke with ico who deals with gdpr they have confimed that animals do not come under gdpr this is getting very suspicious as i spoke to the old vets pratice again and the details i gave them dont match up according to the vets, we have now contacted cab with our concerns

As he’s not that old, have you tried contacting the breeder, who may be able to help you, in that he/she could perhaps confirm the people you got him from were the original owners. The breeder could always contact the buyer, as she has the original info. Breeders often want the best for their pups, even when they are off to new homes, and a complete vet history would definitely benefit Rocco.

Have you tried googling Rocco’s KC name in Google, in quotes, see what comes up. He seems to have fathered a litter of pups in Leeds, I think.

we have taken advice from cab and we can make a complaint towards old vet pratice and if they dont respond we can seek legal advise as ico confirmed that animals do not come under gdpr and all we are after is the animals history , we did see online that a person with the same name was done for selling horses that she borrowed but might not be the same person involved its just old that his info apart from the documents we have dont add up plus we are unable to hold of the old owner, he was fathered by guru king

Good luck... If you don't get anywhere, remember that you're just in the same position as many people who adopt a dog - their previous history and medical conditions are likely to be unknown, so they just have to go on the dog now in front of them. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of his skin problems and find a food that suits him.

If you are unsure about raw feeding, why not have a look at the website JoanneF mentioned above and try a decent grain-free food from there? There's plenty that are a lot better than Royal Canin.

thanks for your replys we really appreciated all your responses :)

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out! Rocco’s lucky to have you on his side. (I think I might have been a bit ambiguous. What i Meant is that Rocco seems to have fathered some puppies in Leeds, he’s mentioned as dad.)

As JudyN says, lots of rescues come without a history, and do really well!

That is why other dogs may be growling at him ....
Are you getting him neutered. ...

we are not sure what the rules are for kennel cub regarding haveing him sorted out as we have never had a dog that was reg with them before , we know some dogs dont like breeds like french bulldog and pug and boxer down to the face and it seems other dogs dont seem that as a dog , we never had any problem with our other dog allthough fully intacked male allthough he was a chihuahua

It makes no difference to the kennel club wether he is neutered he will still be kc reg
