Now what on earth do i need to be vindicated for

;)

I think it really depends on each dog and each individual owner and were they run their dogs. If there is a risk of coats been caught on bushes or if the dogs are running in areas free from obsticles ie the beach.

My greyhounds will run into the garden and have a wee in this weather without their coats but put their leads on a suggest they go for a walk without them you've got no chance. On the other hand I've got whippets Archie and Simba who will refuse to move if they have coats on. My house has no central heating so its not the warmest of places and I do have 3 whippets that wear fleecy pyjamas in the house Bandit Holly and Amber feel the cold the others aren't bothered by the cold.

I let mine run around without their coats/fleeces, Ann, but that's because they think coats are for ragging off each other (w00t)

I let them out the other morning with their coats on and Tizzy came back without hers :( when I found it, it was ripped to pieces  thanks to Rosie and Ella playing tug o war with it  !!! I've lost count of the number of fleece jumpers which now have holes in the tail end where they grab hold and hang on!!! They always come straight back indoors after running around so don't really get a chance to get cold

On the subject of running in snow raised on this thread ....... mine run in my fields and I know exactly what is under the snow and so do they :D Same as your girls and you know what is on the beach (the odd handbag, pair of shoes etc  )

I'm so glad someone asked this - have been in two minds about it all winter. My two chase each other a lot and last winter when they were pups they'd use the coats to catch each other and drag down to the ground. My current thinking is that they stay warm when running around, but I put their coats on to and from the park. I hadn't thought about their coats as potential hazards - but now that it's been mentioned - I think I'll stick to the way I'm doing it.
The other reason, I'm glad of this thread is Hely's signature... How awesome is that? Brought a smile to my face!

Well said  I'm sure none of us risk running our hounds on ground we aren't confident about, snow or no snow. Although no running dog can be guaranteed to run injury free, whatever the conditions.

Mine where coats if its pouring down with rain or snowing and we are going on a road walk, or standing still in the same weather conditions watching our son play rugby.

I think it's a personal choice if you want your whippet to wear a coat let them where one if you don't .... dont !

What makes me laugh is an owner with a big fat Lab with a coat on, on a chilly day and my whippies dont have a coat on :p

We have that a big fat goldie wearing a coat but mine don't have them on. I have had some comments made about it too saying it is too cold for them to be out without their coats on. Sorry but the ones that want them on wear them if the boys don't like wearing them then they can go out ' naked ' if that whta they want. The other day when it was snowing I spent half an hour trying to get them to wear coats but gave up and took the without.

same here Julie.. when my boys are 'naked' so to speak...we often pass labs, spaniels and other large breeds wearing coats too....

and another thing my boys faces change when the coats appear....they look kind of 'sad' dont think they really like them much.

 Blue is the opposite, she goes Bonkers when her coat appears, and thrusts her head into it...she loves her wardrobe!!!

K brings her coat to me.........well not always her coat,

anyone of them will do

I just think its amazing that in this weather, when we humans go out, we are dressed up in thermals/ thick coats/ hats/ gloves/ boots etc. Yet whippets, with no fat on them to speak of and fine hair, happily run around either without coats at all or with little coats the like of which certainly wouldn't keep me warm. Nature is so wonderful!

I find it amazing that apart from Tala, the girls find it most

upsetting to go to the toilet in the rain/snow..........they look

at me like im mad when i put them in the yard.

But whatever the weather rain, hail, snow. gale force winds,

they are still up for a walk

Right here is my opinion i personally will not run my 2 in coats, because i think like us when doing any physical exercise you warm up quickly and once you have finished you do get cold rapidly which is when you appreciate some warmth over your muscles.

I feel my girls are no different and will only put their coats on once they have had a good hooley about, having said that if it is particulary cold on the beach like u ann i will leave them on as there is nothing they can get caught on, at the end of the day it is personal prefrence and everyone is different :)

I suppose i should have added that it takes me about

5 minutes to get home from the beach, so they dont

really cool of outside.

I've been to Blackpool beach Kelly but not with the girls.

Im sure your's have a brilliant time down there :)

Mine both wear coats most of the time in winter, even out running. They have no issue with wearing coats, I just have the short cut Masta ones that you can buy fairly cheaply. I have never encountered any issues with them hauling them off or the coats coming undone.

If I take mine out naked and let them off the lead they come straight back to me and shiver and generally look miserable. So I would rather that they had jackets on, were warm, and actually ran about rather than being a shivering shadow to their mum! ;)

I never allow my dogs to free run with coats on at all. I once saw a friends lurcher get it's leg caught in it's coat, unfortunately she broke her shoulder and had to be put to sleep, she was only 3 years old and in her prime.. Obviously at the end of the day it's down to the owner to decide whats best for there dog and weigh up the benefits and hazards etc. I personally think the hazards far outweigh the benefit, thats why i never let them free run wearing a coat.

I don't let my whippets free run with coats on, but if it's cold i will put a coat on them when i put them back on the lead to stop them cooling to quickly and catching a chill.

I'll also slip a coat on them if it's cold and raining (lead walking only)

If it wasn't for my youngest whippet wearing his coat whilst out on a walk he would of been killed when he fell 30 foot down cliff... it happened in a brief moment, and in a place we regularly walk.

I had to climb down and all I could get hold of was his tail... it was his coat that stopped him from getting hurt.. as it happens he came out without a scratch.

But you can say that about anything......

Collars, they could get them caught in something???
