This has now drifted right away from the original question and is becoming a racing thread!!!!!!!!!!!
In this case I don't think it's strayed too far off topic as it's still discussing reasons for using certain dogs, and perhaps crossing racing/show lines for various purposes. I think it's still relatively on topic as long as people keep their personal issues out of it and remember to be polite  . Everyone has a point of view and it would be a boring world if we all believed 100% of the same thing.

Did you ever see McTavish, he was a bright brindle and behind lots of todays whippets, in fact he is behind my foundation bitch, Jenny Wren of Rystone!!!!

I have to say I agree with Liza about some show dogs being fast.I race at sussex long dogs and we have classes for KC pedigree whippets the races are over 150 250 and 350 yards one race at each distance per meeting.

There is a dog running very well at the moment who is half way to becoming a wcra racing champ but he is often beaten by a new members dog who is show bred by Ch Airescot Ruby Rascle out of a dam with mostly Kaymark and Spyanfly lines.

I do think however the old coursing lines did much to keep the breed whole as they seemed to bridge the gap between racing and showing
I also agree that some show breds can have some speed. I don't know which dog you are referring to but being a half champ or even a champ with the wcra means nothing in the racing world these days. They don't get the entry of fast dogs anymore - and before bertha shouts me down (again), just look at the Whippet News Top Ten, only two owners run with the wcra, the rest will not. The Veteran Top Ten, there are only 2 dogs who race with the wcra, and it must be remembered that those dogs had more opens in which to qualify. Also since the wcra lost credibility, and the fast dogs don't go, more people go with their slow dogs which previously they wouldn't have bothered entering.
I think June's confirmed what I was getting at.

My own peds where race x show bred. They did, on occasion beat some race bred peds, where they fast? By my standards no.

The other matter is that every dog has it's distance. What will bury the competition over 150yds could easily be beaten by a slow whippet running a distance of 350yds. The whippet winning over 150yds is a faster dog though because it has faster acceleration.

Distance/ Time = Speed.

Yes, she is on the Whippet Archives. She was given to me as she needed a home. The person who bred her got her back from a family that just left her shut outside with no shelter. She was a sweet, very bright little bitch and we loved her very much. She gave me R, Blue Magpie, sire of the UK's only blue champion dog.

Have a look behind Ch Charmoll McTavish and you will see the Cockrow line. Students of the breed ought to study these lines and understand the tremendous influence on the breed this small dedicated kennel holds. I could bore you for hours but just take a look at the offspring of Cockrow Lady Kate. McTavish was by Cinnamon, a son of Samarkand Sun Courtier and grandson of Tarragon. I wish Tarragon had been used at stud a little more than he was, he could have had great influence on the breed. Also take a look at McTavish's offspring, truly influential it reads like a "who's who" of the breed.

I really liked the Samarkand whippets. My daughter surprised me today by saying that my old 10 year old fawn bitch Poppy, looked like a Shalfleet. She grew up with whippets and came to shows with me. Barbara was in the ring then showing her dogs. I never thought of Poppy in that way, but looking at her I can see what my daughter means. She is by Rivedo Run Don't Fly, out of Poachyn Camelia. They both go back down to Shalfleets and all the old lines that todays folk should look at. There were some beautiful whippets about then. However, most came from big kennels who could afford to run a big show team.

It is very different today, but we should consider what the dog we plan to use has behind him and also what his progeny is like. We should study pedigress way back, because you can get throw backs.

Enough rambling.

Can I just comment here that those are older lines but they are NOT old fashioned lines. I can show you lots of examples on The Whippet Archives of dogs of 40 or 50 years ago I would love to take into the ring now, one example being Ch Cockrow Tarquogan of Glenbervie, have a look and tell me you couldn't picture him in the ring now and he was born in 1963.

I know they are not old fashioned but that sadly is what people call them! They also get called English whippets?? Having shown a correct sized dog for the past few years I do get a little tired of people telling me he is small, he isn't small he is the correct size.

To be honest I think we should look a little more at some of these dogs and maybe head back that way in size. :-

Which is why I gave up showing. 17 years ago I had 2 pups Shalfleet/Nimrodel lines who were both correct size, and I was told not to bother with Champ shows as they were too small. Those were the days when I saw your mum and dad at all the shows Jenny.

Think my dog is the "show bred" referred to in the post about sussex longdogs.........I tried my hand at showing {pretty poorley I might add} but he always looked small compared to most others and yet he is 20 ins tts and weighs 30lb...I really am no expert but isn't that correct size?

the whippet is a wonderful breed and its my opinion that it is 2nd to none in his role , he is a companion , a hunter , a racing machine also a being beautiful animal of elegant and grace , there are very few breeds that can even come near the whippet in the versatility stakes !!!

the temp comes first for me , i dont care if he is cow hocked ewe necked and parrot mouthed as long as he is good with my kids and family but from a breeding point of view there must be many factors involved before making the choice of sire

i would say , temp and conformation woud be my first 2 , working ability would be in there but not essential

the older lines are behind my breeding too
