Hello all...I`m new to this so please forgive me if I make any "faux pas".Until Sunday we were the very proud owners of 2 darling whippets....James and Henry (as well as a mini poodle) On Sunday morning our world as we knew it ended and Henry who was only 3 in October passed away - the cause ...he had unbeknownst to us, eaten some raisins and had this had caused complete system failure and poisoning. We had rushed him to the vets on Saturday and the vet said it is becoming more common and showed us a report written only this year - 2007.....it is like peanut allergy in humans in that some dogs would be fine but others go into shock and die - so pleeeease all be aware of this as we are utterly devastated and desolate and I want to prevent if I can this happening to any other special little whippets. (None of the nurses who treated our boy had heard of it either.) We have lost one of the things most precious to us and are feeling floored but so is James - his brother....Nothing could ever replace our splendid Henry Blue but if anyone knows of any whippets who need a good home and sooo much love ( and where ALL raisins have been banished) please let us know ....it has not been easy to do this - many thanks for reading.... Karen :(

Thank you so much for all the messages...it`s so reassuring that there are so many people who know how we feel when others just think we are being dramatic and unbelievably think "it`s just a dog".

(I think I`ve also posted a reply which was the same posting again...I`m still getting the hang of this...)Karen

:( This is just awful :( You must be devastated. I really hope you find a companion for James soon :luck:

It's very generous of you to post this as a warning for others to read. I wonder if you'd mind if I add it to our FAQ forum? There's a section there about toxins which mentions grapes/raisins, but your post could help draw attention to it a little more.

The link is here: FAQ - keeping your dog healthy - scroll down for toxins

PS: when replying to a post, click the 'reply' button and then type your text in below the text that showing as being quoted. I'm not sure, but I think you might have hit 'quote' instead. I've done that before!! :)

Thank you for that...of course you can..I didn`t know where to start to spread the word and there`s nothing up in vets` surgeries -it`s all just chocolate info. so as much passing around as possible would be my dream - even if it won`t bring our Hen back at least it might prevent another tragedy... thanks, Karen

Welcome to K9 - so sorry it's under these circumstances.

RIP Henry. :(

We've lost 2 dogs very suddenly and unexpected you have my total heartfelt sympathy; you may not beleive it now but it does get easier. :(

:luck: finding another whippie.

It would be lovely to see some photos of your boys :)

I'm so very sorry for your loss. :(

Thank you for sharing the warning with others

i just wanted to say how awful it was to read of you losing your young dog to this little known poisoning.

i feed raw to my dogs which involves adding fruit and veggies to their diet and lots of people think its ok to add grapes or raisins.

i learned of the dangers of raisins while doing a course with catherine o'driscoll of www.canine-health-concern.org.uk and im so glad i did.

thank you for spreading the word at your sad time

you are very brave and i hope you find another whippet very soon to give your love to

my very best wishes

I am so sorry to read of your sad loss - RIP Henry. Best of luck in finding a new companion, sorry it is under such sad circumstances :huggles:
