Hi everyone,
It's been such a long time since me and my little man were last on here - well over a year I should think. I hate the thought of that. This forum really used to make us smile (and wag ) because it's filled with people who are just as obsessed with their Whippets as we are!
Here is a photo of my little man Jesse :wub: Hopefully someone will remember us! Purposely posted an old one so that should help with all of your memories!
Unfortunatly, however, we do not return on good terms and it upsets me to think that the first update is full of disheartening news.
A few months back Jesse began to get a little aggitated with his rear left leg, kicking it out with frustration every now and then while he'd be trying to sleep. This gradually worsened, and it became obvious it was really starting to bother him when he started to hold it up a little bit. We were all off on holiday to Weymouth that week (Jesse included obviously ) and so we thought we would take him to the vets just for peace of mind, so that we could relax on holiday without too much worry about his leg.
The vet looked him over thoroughly but came to the conclusion that he should be fine on holiday, because he could not actually feel anything wrong with the leg. He gave him some painkillers and just told us to take it easy with him, and not to have too many strenuous walkies!
However, over the holiday Jesse's condition deteriorated. Not only was he holding his leg up most of the time, but he also seemed depressed with it - and for a little doggy who loves holidays, we knew something wasn't right.
While we were down at Weymouth sea front one sunny morning we noticed there was a PDSA van giving free consulations. We were all so worried about Jesse, and it was inevitably taking it's toll on our enjoyment of the holiday, so we popped along and asked for their advice. While the people were very nice and friendly, they too said they could not see or feel anything out of the ordinary, and told us that next step would be ex-rays when we returned home to our regular vetinary clinic.
A few weeks past, and a lot of vetinary visits, when we finally got the news we were all dreading... my special little boy has Osteosarcoma. No words in the world could ever describe how absoloutely devistated we all were and I don't think I will ever truly come to terms it. The vet told us that the cancer was far too advanced in his leg to be able to save it, and amputation would be the only possible outcome other than to let our little lad go. Amputation would also mean immediatly relieving Jesse of the dreadful pain he was in. However, he had more visits to several vetinary clinics to determin whether the cancer had spread and we were thrilled to receive some ray of hope that it has not yet appeared to have spread into his lungs or chest.
However, we still had one of the hardest decisions of our live's to make... and it was an extremely tough time for all of us. Did we amputate the leg? Knowing that this would mean going through a lot of trauma and trips to the vets for chemotherapy. Did we want to put him through all of that, knowing that at the end of it all our special little boy might only have a few months left?
Despite how hard it was, we had to come to a decision, and it was actually 2 of our neighbours children who helped us determin the best choice for Jesse;
"It's better for him to have 3 legs, than to die..."
'Out of the mouths of babes' as they say. We had been thinking far too much about what was best and analysing every single point on either side, that we seemed to lose track of the answer that was staring us in the face; we HAD to give our little man longer... whether that be a few months or a few years.
And the rest, as they say, is history. Our decision was made and the faster we took action, the sooner we could have our little man back in our arms again.
A grueling 3 days were ahead of us, full of fears, worries, tears and many a long hour of waiting for that phone call...
Today, we finally got it.
Our baby Jesse is coming home!!!! :lol: :wub: :lol: :wub:
