Hi all

our whippet girl was bitten by a pit bull at the week end. She was in great pain and shock at the time and screamed for what felt a long time. She has recovered now and the wound is closing slowly but is still quite stiff on her side (bruised ribs?).

Unfortunately on two occasions whilst distracted my OH forgot about her injury and held her where her wound is. Both time she yelped in great pain and turned back to bite him. It did not draw any blood but it was still painful to him.

The dog was shaking afterwards and my OH felt terrible (especially second time). We cuddled the dog afterwards and did not either ignore her or tell her off as we thought there was enough bad feelings around.

Would you tolerate such circumstances or do you consider biting under any cicumstances totally unacceptable?

She is getting better now.

Are your surprised! Of course she will bite if you hurt her. She has been attacked by a pit bull, what do you expect?

Did you take her to the vet?

I would tolerate it from a dog in severe pain and just ignore it .

oh, your poor wee whippie - how awful. I think you did the right thing to just let the bite pass and give her lots of gentle affection :huggles:

Don't you think if a dog was in severe pain it should be taken to the vet?

I would have thought the dog would have been seen by a vet . In my experience even though they have been seen by a vet they can be on medication and still be in severe pain .

What are you getting on my case for it's not even my dog ?

is this a wind up? i think the problem is your husband not the dog

i think your husband deserved what he got off her ,i mean if somone grabed me were i had a nasty wound i give em a bloody good slapp ,dogs cant slap so a bite is the same me thinks

does your dog have a name?? or do you just call it The Dog??

i would expect any pet of mine to bite me if i caused pain to it, poor thing isnt going to just take it is it :(

is she having pain killers perscribed by your vet?? if not i should think a visit would be the best and asap, its possible a infection could be brewing with a dog bite and a course of anti bs will be needed.

I dont understand why you are taking this attitude.

No-one has said the whippet hasn't been seen by a

vet so why are you assuming the worst of this poster ?

Confess when I first read the post I thought it was a really dumb question.

Having read it again... I think it's a really really dumb question.

Agree that it's unfair to prejudge the poster when so many facts are missing. Think it's common knowledge that pit bull's aren't smiled upon by the authorities when things go wrong yet no information on that issue was disclosed by the poster.

I (rightly or wrongly) concluded that the victim hadn't been to the vets. Wouldn't a vet have dressed the wound? given antibiotics?? given advice? ?? ???

Just my opinion as they say...

Because vets have not been mentioned and what was a pit bull doing attacking a whippet. I thought by law they had to be muzzled out side their owners home.

They do have to be muzzled in a public place, also on a lead.

I also thought they had to be registered so a call to the police is in order.

You need to be responsible.

Today pit bull bites a whippy tomorrow who knows?

Well said, the whole thing sound very odd to me!

I will answer the quetion without presuming all sorts. a dogs reaction to pain or being scared is fight or flight as she was being helds she would have no option than to bite to tell your hubby that it realy realy hurts so get off. i would ignore it compltly. if shes not a nomaly a bitter this is out of cariter but being bit isnt an every day thing eather.

just to say when ruby and our shelby were bitten the vet left the would open undress to heal with 2 hourly cleaning by us on another occaasion when cally was bitten the would was stiched so it depends on the would and were it is.

Its only Monday  my dog cut its leg on barbed wire on Friday had 6 staples she also had metacam and antibiotic injection, she isn't recovered yet so I find it odd that your girl has recovered already, from which must have been a very traumatic incident :(

Unfortunately on two occasions whilst distracted my OH forgot about her injury and held her where her wound is. Both time she yelped in great pain and turned back to bite him. It did not draw any blood but it was still painful to him.

Forgot about her injury??????? she will bite it is all she is able to do to get the person who is causing her pain away from her

The dog was shaking afterwards and my OH felt terrible (especially second time). We cuddled the dog afterwards and did not either ignore her or tell her off as we thought there was enough bad feelings around.

She would be shaking because she will have realised that it was wrong to bite but the pain will have altered her state of mind :(

What I wouldn't tolerate is the owner of the pit bull to get away with it

She is getting better now.

I am glad she is getting better and it would be nice to hear she has been to a vet, even if only for pain relief

This type of thing happen a few times on here rather than ask if they dont undrestand somthing in a thread they presum the worst.

sorry to hear that your whippet got attack by a pit bull....hope she has a speedy recovery...even if the wound wasnt big... the shear weight of the pit bull compared to whippets can do alot of damage so understandable shes going to be very bruised for a long time...maybe a trip(or second trip) to the vets to make sure she hasnt done any internal damage and get something for the pain, as its only be a few days, shes bound to be still in shock and very sore

when we were away for our hols with dogs...my peggy had done too much(she had an accident last year and also been attacked by gsd) and while she was resting my son accidently cuddle her and she snarled and showed her teeth with is very out of character....the reason being she was in pain and as soon as we got back home a trip to the vets and was on medication

maybe you should report this incident with the police
