Thanks all for asking about him. The news on Woody isn't good. :( The leg had re dislocated despite being strapped up. Being strapped up had caused the leg to start weeping and the whole of the leg and shoulder was covered in fluid, with small sores starting to develop. Also the leg from the elbow to the wrist was so swollen that had we left things another day then he'd have lost the leg due to circulation problems. (My very grateful thanks to Carmel Smith :huggles: and Linda Turner :huggles: for all their advice and warnings 'cause of you I phoned the vet right away at my first thought that things weren't right).

Sandra put the shoulder back in again but it just comes out very easily again. She's re strapped it but obviously not as it was, this time it's sticking straight out in front of him. But that makes it very easy to be knocked and thus re dislocated again.

There is bad muscle damage and also ligament damage to the shoulder. So it is very likely that it'll need to be operated on but she's not sure who has done such an op as what she thinks needs doing to the shoulder joint I think. It all got very technical  but involves makes grooves in the bone. She's also not sure that the ligament that would be moved and used to stabilize the joint is actually viable. I'm guessing that they won't know until they open him up. He won't get full forward reach back. Failing that option he can have the joint bolted? and thus only have movement in his elbow and wrist. Failing that it's amputation or ........... :(

But he's home and he's yelled to go out and yelled to have some food. So at least the slaves are working hard. :sweating:

If anyone knows of an orthopedic specialist who has worked on dislocated shoulders could you pm me please.

So sorry to hear Woody's poorly. :( :huggles: :huggles: to all of you. :huggles:

I was very sorry to hear about poor Woody, Barbara. I do hope he makes a full recovery. That is two nasty shoulder injuries in a very short period of time, I know it goes like that some-times, but may-be we should be ensuring there is an adequate run off when the lure slows before stopping to attempt to minimise such injuries. In people, a dislocated shoulder is very common in rugby players, and is as a direct result of a slam from a burly opponent which is the usual cause. The pile up on the lure seems to be the place where these nasties can happen, and a sudden stop can be a contributing factor. It may be worth all clubs reconsidering their run-offs and lure driving.

Any-way, I do hope that you find a good vet who can do the op, there must be some-one out there with the necassary experience.

We ALL hope he makes a full and quick recovery. :luck: :luck: :luck:

So sorry to hear this, if it does come to it dogs do very well on three legs although I know its not what you would want being involved in racing, he could still have a very happy full life. Keeping my fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery :)
