had letter of my vet this morning saying blue was due for his 3monthly worming ..i thought they had to be wormed every month and have been doing so since iv had blue .only done ollie once as not had him that long but ther due to be wormed next week by my monthly dates .my vets should know ther being done monthly as i buy ther worming tabs from the vets :blink: so what i need to know is are they supposed to be done monthly or every 3mths :thumbsup:

I do mine every 3 months and get a reminder from my vets too, as I weigh mine every week for racing I just bob in for the tablets as they are given according to weight, drontal +, at least you'll know for definate Blue hasn't had chance to get worms

The breeding cycle of the most common dog worms is about 3 months. Dogs can pick up worms from the ground on your walks so worming them every 3 months does not give the worms much chance to breed. Some tapeworm eggs are carried by fleas, so if your dog has just one flea and eats it he will get tapeworms. Worming every 3 month will break the cycle. However there has been lot of research showing that certain amount of worms is actually beneficial. Just like we know that some bacteria is imperative to proper digestion of food. It has been discovered that the relationship between worms and their host can be actually symbiotic. However, as we live in such crowded circumstances, and our dogs are getting more infected than they would in wild I worm my adult dogs about every 4-6 months.

Worming every month is necessary for some less common worms, so your puppy is just very well wormed, but give him 3 months break, now!

I've looked into this quite a lot as opinion seems to differ quite substantially. In short, i feel that worming mine every 6 months is fine. ( i did it more regularly when young pups) I personally would not worm every month.

I did not mention I do worm baby puppies more often as well; at 2 weeks, 4 weeks 6 weeks, 8 weeks then 3 months of age after that go to the 3+ routine. But i also give an extra worm treatment before I mate my bitch and then worm her with the pups. I would also give worming treatment if a dog does not look nice and shiny or is very skinny. Also anybody new arriving in my place gets wormed soon after. and i only use Drontal syrup for bubs, tablets after.

there is nothing wrong with being causious love better over wormed than under wormed, im a 3mths wormer too

you are better off asking if you dont know! everyone dont know all there is to know we are all learning along the way off each other!

ollie and blue are well looked after by you and you family,any 1 can see that!

With our horses, because we are on an organic farm, we dont worm routinely but do worm counts to see the worm burden and then worm as necesary.

Is there a system for dogs like this?

If not, I will do the puppy frequency worming and then the 3 monthly one as usual.

The other thing to remember is, if you haven't wormed your dog for a while and it has a large worm burden and then is suddenly wormed, it can show signs of illness and people tend to blame the wormer. It is more of the case that the dog has suddenly been purged & the body just can't cope rather than the wormer making it ill! So, as Seraphina has said, a few worms are normal and beneficial so it is better to worm little and often rather than one big spurge every now and again.

Another thing, not all wormers agree with all dogs. Drontal makes one of mine vomit so I use Panacur on her instead with no problem. If you find the brand you are using does not agree with them, change to another don't persist in giving that one just because everyone else uses it!!

:blink: I worm my whippets and lurchers twice a year. I personally dont feel comfortable with pumping harsh chemicals into them every 12 weeks or so and I dont think they need to be done any more frequently than that. Everyone has a different opinion though and I think you just have to go with what you think is best for you and your dogs :cheers:

If you hunt rabbits you should worm once a month for fleas can pass from rabbit into your dogs mouth and turn into worms ,after hunting season I would go back to every 3 months

I worm my dogs every 3-4 months (3 or 4 times a year). I haven't had reason to believe they have worms; it is a precaution. I've used Johnson all- in-one wormer, kills both round worms and tape worms, from the pet shop and I wonder whether I should be buying Drontal instead?

I wouldn't use anything bought from a pet shop!! For an effective wormer you either need to get one from your Vet or (much cheaper) from an animal pharmacist like Canine Chemist (Hyperdrug) or Vet-Medic, most are available without prescription now. And all dogs have worms to some extent or another, whether they are wormed or not.

when we worm a dog with Drontal, how long does it take for the b****rs to finish coming out ? :x

I worm every 3 months too. Ricky and Robbie get Drotal + and Gizzy panacure granule.

Mine dont hunt or they would be wormed every 4 weeks
