Beautiful girl and her gorgeous puppies. They all look like they're thriving now.

But ...

She must have been hit before because when you go to pet her she flinches and closes her eyes tightly expecting the worst. She is so gentle and sweet, an absolute darling
How very awful for her.

I'm crying again!!!!!

Lovely, beautiful Dilly   She is looking so much better and there is some weight on her now as well :D

The puppies are just gorgeous too - what stunning pictures of them all

They were boarded up in there with no food or water! She could not have got in there by herself. You can see by the state of her she was not just left there for a night or two without anything to eat or drink! Sorry Seraphina but this was an act of abandonment.

None of us knows what has happened. As we have not seen the barn it is not possible to be sure there was not some small gap she could have gotten in. Sometimes a loose board or sheet of metal can easily be pushed one way, to get in but not the other way to get out again. Or it is possible that somebody boarded it up not realizing she was in there.

Why would this nasty owner not try to flog her for few hundred pounds if he could not be bothered whelping her? In any case even if the pups are not purebred Whippets he would probably get something for them in a pet shop.
Even if what you are suggesting is true (and I think you are being too kind/ naive about the way sighthounds are treated by many in Ireland) to be in this state she would have to be missing for weeks - so why hasn't the loving owner been looking for her??? People throw whippets away there, they don't buy them.. :(

And how would it account for her nervousness and flinching. I can't think of any excuse/ reasonable story behind this, I really can't.

 She is just beautiful, those eyes!! Her puppies look as thought they are thriving too

Well what an absolute sweetheart Dilly is, she was a little shy and nervous of us at first but soon the tail was wagging and she was even jumping up for a bit of attention. She must have been hit before because when you go to pet her she flinches and closes her eyes tightly expecting the worst. She is so gentle and sweet, an absolute darling  Her puppies are little porkers as you can see!

Hi Seraphena, you are correct that we cannot know for sure as we have not seen the barn, I am going on what the warden who picked her up from that barn has said. I do admire that you are looking for the positive in her situation, unfortunately when you live in Ireland and see how badly lurchers, greyhounds and whippets are treated here, it is very hard to see the positive. Lurchers are picked up as strays on a daily basis in alot worse condition that Dilly is in. They are beaten an abused by some members of certain communities and have been found dead in rivers with bricks tied around their necks, thrown out on the motorway to be hit by speeding cars and greyhounds have been found abandoned with their ears cut off so their owners cannot be traced. There are people here who actually provide a service to shoot these dogs if you no longer want them but you have to pay them. It is extremely difficult to find homes over here for sighthounds because of peoples attitudes towards them. Now with the recession here, things are even worse. The UK is miles ahead of us when it comes to their attitude towards these dogs and so from the way in which she was found, the contidion in which she was found and her behaviour it is hard to think it was anything other than abandonment. However as you say that does not matter now, all that matters is that she is safe and has a positive future ahead of her (most likely to be in the UK)

The little white girl is white and fawn/brindle, mostly white. I would say at this stage that they are whippet crosses. Not sure what they are crossed with but time will tell ;)

We've been to Ireland on a few visits so what we've seen will only be "snapshots"; but I was very upset a couple of years ago when we stayed there, to witness the casual attitude of many people, towards dogs.

My vet treated a greyhound last year with its ears cut off, it had been left tied to a tree on a freezing cold night and was lucky to be found by someone who took it straight to a vet otherwise it would surely have died. Sadly she was telling me that it is becoming more common practice here in England. The barbaric nature of some humans appalls me.

Sadly you only have to look at a few of the Irish rescue sites to see the reality for some dogs there, especially sighthounds and collies who are seen as working dogs and not suitable for pets and are often 'got rid of' in the most appalling ways :(

Of course the same things happen in England and of course there are many true dog lovers and people working very hard in rescue in Ireland, but animal cruelty does seem more prevalent in some areas there. The poor old greyhounds really don't stand a chance, there are something like 20,000 a year bred for racing in Ireland and very few homes for ex-racers, some come to England for rehoming, I hate to think what happens to the rest.

Dilly is totally beautiful and someone will be very lucky to have this girl. Her pups are gorgeous and look really plump and healthy too, I'm sure they will find lovely homes (but it's mum that has my heart  ).

Dilly is just beautiful. and the pups look fab...liking the white one too...but she has done a marvellous job poor love despite everything....

It makes me ashamed to be a human, to see what people have done to Dilly, and to see some of the conditions that bitches are bred in over here too, and people even show them off on forums like this...and are praised for it...sickening...

Good Luck darling Dilly xxx

That's it then, why did'nt everyone else think of that, she wonders across a field finds a barn, moves a board or a sheet of metal to get in then has her babies. Or boarded up with no one realizing she was in there. Total Rubbish.

She was left to starve by some demented sad excuse for a human being.

What exellent news that she and her pups are doing well.

What a gorgeous girl she is, such beautiful eyes    I wish her and her lovely babies the very happiest of lives from hereon in. They certainly deserve it.
