Colour Preferences In Shows..

Sorry if this has been done before! I'm obviously quite new to the world of Whippets and have spent many an hour surfing the net to get all the info I can about them. However, one thing I've noticed is that loads of the show winners are fawn/ brindle/ brindle partis/ fawn partis. I haven't seen many black or blue dogs in these line ups. Is there a reason for this? Do whippet colours go in and out of fashion?! Have lots of breeders gone for these colours so now the 'best' show dogs (I use the term very loosely..!) are the fawns and brindles? Grover and Roscoe's dad was black (from working lines) and mum fawn (from show lines) and their litter had black/white, blue/white, brindles and brindle/ white but no solid fawns like mum.

Obviously I think blacks and blues are the most beautiful dogs in the whole wide world but I may be a little biased... :-
 
I don't really know much about this but I will be interested in what other people say :thumbsup:

Don't know if this is unusual or not but Scout's Dad was a champion and he was Black /white ;)

this has been done to death over the years, very few "show" bred dogs are solid hence less winning also rightly or wrongly judges tend to favour fawns.parti's etc
 
Personally if the dog the standard it should be,then colour should not make any differents,whether,blue,black or whatever.
 
There should be no colour preference in the ring, sadly I know from experience there is. I have been breeding blues since 1975, registerd my affix in 1973, been involved with whippets since the late 50's. Here is a photo of my championship show winning blue boy, you can win with blues, it is hard though. One of my dogs sired this country's only blue champion, Martinsell Wild and Lonely. there's a smattering of blacks in the ring now and some do well. They can look very sleek and glamourous.

I love the blue colouring but hardly ever see a blue or a blue particolour in the showring.

I would like to think that a judge would award a good dog of any colour. There is some optical illusion effect with colours (blacks can look even finer boned than they really are; certain white markings might make a dog look dishfaced, shallow chested, etc) but that's just a first impression which should be counteracted by a closer look
 
I've always found blue whippets one of the most beautiful and elegant :thumbsup:

Bertha he is absolutely stunning...that dog would make me stop in my tracks in a way that perhaps some lighter ones may not...and it's not only solids you don't see winning much, it's the black/white and blue/whites like my two.
 
There are a few more blacks / black and whites in the ring this last year I think.

Badger has done quite well, but showing is only his 'other' job (w00t)

I think one of the most stunning black&white whippets I've seen are the brother&sister from Hungary (not gonna risk spelling the kennel incorrectly).
 
Remember the judges can place what is in the ring and generally there aren't that many blacks or blues.

Last year I can think of a few blacks and blues doing really well - winning tickets, BPIB's, class winners etc. :thumbsup:

From what I have seen here on k9 recently, there are some very nice young blue and black (like Badger :wub: :wub: :wub: ) :) , wish we had some like that here. My Claudia is normally the only blue at a show.
 
(w00t) Hi guys!

I've just had my foundation litter and I have 4 beautiful blacks in it. Now I can only hope that they are good enough for the ring. Here in Australia it is very hard to win with the solids or party's of black or blue. My girl won some of her classes(which I am very proud of) but never seemed to be able to get the challenge. I have even had a judge tell me how lovely she was then proceded to say "Its a shame she's black" :blink: :rant:

I can only hope that it will change one day.............

Is your handsome blue lad called Rystone Blue Magpie. Have just checked my whippet bitch's pedigree certificate because her breeder and I were only corresponding recently and Wild and Lonely's name came up she was going to send me a picture of him but couldn't find one so if this is Jazz's Great Great Grand Father I now know I have a picture of him, which means just as much.

Also staying on the subject of blues, they always seem to be snapped up first in litter, I know because I have been window shopping for a year now and finally got my little blue bitch Kadie!
