Friends of ours part own a narrow boat on the Shropshire Union Canal and needed to change moorings so they asked us if we wanted to go along yesterday. We had a really lovely day and the dogs enjoyed themselves as well (and didn't fall in! :- " )

We deliberately left their harnesses on thinking it would be easier to pull them out if they did go in! Jonah was hopping on and off the boat before we set off as though he'd been doing it all his life, so I did hang on to him for a bit once we got going in case he still thought we were next to dry land and jumped overboard! Muffin was OK but took a little bit longer to settle down.

Here's my next lot of photos (making use of the advert break :- " )

We had to stop to go through a couple of locks. It was such a lovely afternoon and all we could hear were the birds singing - no traffic - bliss! :)

Our first lock - notice the two girls are doing the hard work while the boys are left on the boat!! :- "

Journey's end :( It took us over 2 hours to travel 4/5 miles but it was so peaceful and relaxing - we'd definitely do it again and the dogs were no trouble

Looked like super day out, so peaceful.

To change the subject, where did you get your dogs harnesses from? The one I use one one of mine goes between his front legs and annoy him!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance,

Bertha

Fab pics! I watched Midsomer Murders too. Wasn't it brill? :D

You can get doggy lifebelts you know, not that the boys looked like they needed them.

They're Halti harnesses which I think they sell in Pets at Home but we got them from an internet site, only I can't remember which one it was! A search will find it for you. Jonah's wearing the small size, which is probably a bit tight but Muffin's medium is a bit on the large size! I don't think harnesses fit whippets very well! I like these because they attach to the collar as well so that if they do pull out they're still attached.

I think if we'd been on a river I would have felt happier with them wearing life jackets, but the canal is pretty shallow and I think it would be reasonably safe for someone to jump in and pull them out if the worst came to the worst! But as you say, they were pretty good on the boat on the whole. :)

Fabulous pics

Neil and I have always fancied a canal boat holiday and Tina would be coming along to........with a lifejacket on as I am such a worrier :b

I may be taking her on our friend's boat on Ullswater later this summer so that should be fun (w00t)

Oh Wow, that looks like great fun! You lucky things, lovely photos

My wife first fell in love with whippets when we met two while on a narrowboat on the River Lee. This year we plan to take our two on a narrowboat to see how they get on as we plan to buy our own boat soon.

We have a narrowboat and have had some great holidays and the dogs love it. :) They really enjoy the long walks on the towpath and we try to moor up in quiet spots in the middle of nowhere.

Last year was rather scary as we were on the Thames when it flooded, but normally canal holidays are so relaxing and you can really unwind. The dogs love being on the boat and sitting up at the front watching the world go by.

We'd wondered about a canal holiday with the dogs but weren't sure how they would take to it but after Saturday it's something we will probably think about for the future. The only problem I can see is working the locks as I'm not happy with them around the deep drops, but I suppose they could always stay in the boat quite safely. :) I'll steer and my husband can do all the hard work!
