Ros and Grover have developed the disgusting habit of making a beeline for any bit of spat out chewing gum they find on pavements :x They've even gone as far as scraping it off the tarmac with their front teeth if it's particularly well trodden in :x They treat every walk as some kind of scavenger hunt, picking up anything they see, and I'm turning into a nutter talking to myself about how filthy this country is and how I want to move to Scandinavia (where any chewy would be frozen under three foot of snow, were the scandinavians to leave any, which they would not.)

They do 'leave' when instructed and have learned 'drop' which they largely obey but I seem to spend all my evening local walks taking one pace and saying 'leave', another pace 'drop' because they do go after anything! It's even worse when I have both dogs at once on my own. It's not how I envisaged dog walking! Will they grow out of it?

Well where I live (urban Gateshead) the main hazard is cigarette ends - which both of mine adore! Have also been confronted by savaloy skin and kebab remains!

The other thing I've discovered is they are magnets for urban youths! Gangs of lads that I would usually be terrified of stop to stroke the boyz and chat about whippets! Just goes to show - "there's nowt as queer as folk" as my nana used to say! :teehee:

My Oscar was terrible for this when he was a pup, not too bad now...but will still eat it...

yes normal whippet habits Im afraid...

I spent at least two months "lurking" on this site before we took the plunge with Huey and Marlo in November - and I never read a bad word about whippies...now I find out (some through personal experience) that they love to eat discarded chewy and fag-ends, they pee on their legs(at least 6 times a day!!!), they can be picky eaters blah blah blah - were all of your dogs the paragon of perfect behaviour in Sept, Pct and Nov? ;)

it's chicken bones for Eskil (I hate chicken bones  talking about Scandinavia, when I was visitng Sweden and Norway never did I once see anyone eating bloody chicken on the street - it's unnatural!)

and it's worse at night, last night the little monster brought back a chicken bone, actually waited til I took off his collar and coat, jumped on the sofa, waited for me to go to the kitchen and then started chewing, thank god I noticed before he had swallowed any! eek.

Scary isn't it? Round here I've got the choice between walks around the block where she hovers up everything the school kids have chucked down on the ground and walks through the fields where the delicacies are sheep and rabbit poo! And then she turns up her nose at carefully balanced dog food on her plate!!

I'd have rabbit poo over chicken bones any day, at least it can't puncture their intestines.

Well in just one weekend Molly ate horse poo, cow, poo, sheep poo, rabbit poo and for desert she had cat poo! it was a busy weekend for teeth cleaning  lovely arent they!

yep pooh is a firm fav here to, even their own poo which is rather minging,

i have cought them a couple of times having been in the bin, fished out a dirty nappy manged to pull it appart just enough to eat the poo in there :x :x :x (thank good kyle is now toilet trained)

power rangers and bratz are an expensive delecasy (sp)

oh and worms they love worms, especially dead ones as they can chew them for ages :x

ruby takes great delight in showing you she has a worm then letting you chase her around the garden :teehee:

good wouldnt life be boring if we didnt all have whippies (w00t)

mmm yes chewing gum is really quite civilized compared to other things..

Mine like dead things best :x :x

They're allowed as much horse, sheep, rabbit or cow poo as they want ........ after all it's only mushed up grass and part of their "5 a day"

Because they have free access to horse and sheep poo they hardly ever eat it now!

They all like to steal cat poo out of the tray tho' - REVOLTING!!!!! :x

Please be very careful if your dogs like a bit of chewing gum!!! don't leave it lying around the house where they can get to it most chewing gum today has a substance added called XYLITOL which is a natural sugar and is suberb for us but LETHAL TO DOGS!!!!

I doubt if dog could scavenge enough of used chewing gum to get sick from the xylitol it may contain. After all people usuallu spit it out once they chew out the sweetness = xylitol

Dogs which have ingested foods containing high levels of xylitol (greater than 100 milligram of xylitol consumed per kilogram of bodyweight) have presented with low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) which can be life-threatening.[26] Low blood sugar can manifest as loss of coordination, depression, collapse and seizures as soon as 30 minutes after ingestion.[27][28] Intake of very high doses of xylitol (greater than 500 - 1000 mg/kg bwt) has also been implicated in liver failure in dogs, which can be fatal.[29] These are points of controversy, however, as earlier World Health Organization studies using much higher doses on dogs for long periods showed no ill effect.

However I remeber being told by somebody that chewing gum can cause obstruction in the digestive system in dogs - not sure about that though.

Yes i doubt if they could injest enough xylitol from used chewing gum, but if they were to get hold of a pack lying on the table or wherever! it might not be a good thing especially for a pup. Best be safe than sorry!!

absolutely, it is a good idea to keep out of reach packs of chewing gum, just as any other lollies and chocolates etc. :)

I think Whippets are the most dirty creatures i know

Gum, stubs, poo, dead anything, snails..........if you can't

get there quick enough they will eat the lot. I don't even

have a rubbish bin in the house, Kaya use to get inside it

to scav crap to eat. Everything goes straight into the out-

side wheelies now.

Yep they do that, I have sensitive wet wipes for Ben by the back door as he still wont cock his leg and pee's all over his legs, his tummy and anything else that is in the way ... when he has to go he goes

The are just like kiddies  :-

My Gypsy is a disgusting little madam......if we go to the local park where there is a skate park for the kids......she is straight over there as she knows there is gonna be left over chinese/indian/fish and chips........the amount of crap left there is enpough to feed her for a few days

have to keep her on the lead now as she often has a chinese for breakfast

and she once ran around the park with a sanitary towel in her mouth.......................used :x :x :x :x :x :x :x
