Yes they do loose value "thats a fact of life" no one is going to pay the price of an 8 week old pup for an older pup or adult dog. (that is a fact)

Quote Mark Roberts.

Why then Mark Have I just sold a 9month old dog (Due to Simalar Reasons as Rosalind) and that I bred myself I might add, for a larger amount than the last litter of Pups I bred??

You cannot say thats a fact, each dog no matter what age/colour/sex has a different value according to the individual purchaser.

This dog also went to a pet home- not to be shown...to live with another whippet.

I agree Joanna, we do all have an oppinion and don't want an argument with anybody ,I just cannot sit back and watch someone being slated in a totally unecessary way because other people think they know best for them just because they are experienced whippet owners, she was asking for help and support and got very little :(

I'm so pleased to hear that little Byron may have found a new home Rosalind.  I hope everything works out OK for you, Daisy, Clara and Byron. :luck: :luck:

I still do not understand why it is apparently fine for a breeder to sell an 8 week old pup for a sum of money, but a few weeks later that same puppy (which has been vaccinated, chipped, loved and well cared for) should now be given away to a good home purely because, sadly, the owner has had to make a very hard decision. What about the breeders that 'run on' their pups for weeks/months? As I said, I purchased Dolly at 14 weeks but would not have considered paying any less for her than for a younger puppy. She had been well reared and cared for and was a super pup - so why would I expect a reduction because she was a few weeks older?

I feel rather sad at the way this thread has deteriorated into a slanging match. If I were a new K9er and read these posts I think I would be rather put off joining this site. Surely we should all be supportive of Rosalind's decision - the next person who needs to rehome a dog might not bother to post here, and that would be a real shame. :(

Its better the dog goes to genuine whippet lovers - and I hope thats what we all are on this sight.

It would be a real shame sarah I agree but who would blame them after todays performance, it was Rosalind I was trying to defend she needs support too I have no doubt that Byron will be going to a loving home, I thought this board was human friends as well as K9's :(

Not that I'll have many after this :- "

 Sorry Jest typed the ]

Whippets are a firey lot perhaps us owner do take after them. Now if only I could have the physical resemblance as well.

It is a very sad situation all round really and I would not like to make that decision.

As we all know that any animal is a life long commitment and that involves time, love and money. I am sure the home the little fella goes to will be wonderfull and wish everyone luck. You have to admit he is a lovley looking lad

I am very sorry if I have offended anybody- but please note, I am not just concerned with the money (if I came across that way in my post, then I apologise, but I was typing it very late at night, and looking back at the post, there are several things I would have changed or rephrased.)Firstly, I did ask Jill, who owns Byron's mum, if she could have him back, but as you know, Jill's lurcher Jack died recently, and her remaining 2 whippets Buffy (Byron's mum) and Toby (Byron's litter brother) are still adapting to the new situation, so we agreed that she could not take Byron. Yes, Susan said she could collect Byron, but I was under the impression that this was a suggestion, as I never actually spoke to Susan myself, no date had been set and no arrangements were made. I honestly didn't realise that Susan expected to find a new home for Byron herself, which is why I wrote what I did here on K9. Incidentally, I have never been in contact with Susan except for sending her some photos for a whippet magazine.

A lot of you have condemned me for mentioning money, so please let me explain why I did so. We (my parents and me) have spent at least a couple of hundred pounds on Byron- not including the £250 that we paid Jill. My parents are both pensioners, and I have never been able to work because I have several different long-term illnesses, so I live solely on state disability benefits, which are paltry. Byron was paid for with money that we had saved up, and that is why we decided to mention the subject of payment in my post. The £250 mentioned is an "ideal" amount, set so that nobody tries to get hold of Byron on a whim, because if we had said "free to a good home", then someone out there might just have seen my post and thought that if a puppy was going for free, then they might decide to offer to take him on the spur of the moment, with no prior thought. (I don't mean that there are "shady" characters here as regulars on K9 who would do that, but we all know that people are often directed here from Google or whatever, who just want a puppy- any puppy- there and then.) If the prospective new owner(s) are absolutely ideal,  then of course we wouldn't say "no"- we'd work something out with them! If we can recoup some of the money that we paid, then great- but if not, and Byron gets a loving home, then that's OK too. The money is not the issue- it would just be helpful.

Some of you have queried why we took Byron on in the first place, since Daisy and Clara had had fights before. Just to clarify this, Daisy and Clara did have fights before Byron arrived, yes, but there were only a couple of fights in the last 4 years or so, (before the recent problems, and the arrival of Byron,) and the rest of the time they absolutely loved each other, and were the best of friends. When we decided to take on Byron, they had lived in peaceful domestic bliss for nearly 3 years, so we had no reason to think that there would be any problems. In fact, when Clara went to live on a trial basis with Jo and Scott last week, Daisy was upset and pining for her sister, despite the fact that they would try and kill each other if left together, and that Clara had inflicted serious wounds on Daisy!

I hope that this post has clarified some of the issues, and that those who have been angry with me realise that myself and my parents are not money-obsessed monsters, just people looking for a good home for Byron, who live on a tight budget. A big "thank you" goes out to everyone who has been understanding and supportive of our situation.

Update! We have just had an offer of a home for Byron from a member of K9, and we have agreed that they are just what Byron needs! I am not going to say who they are just yet, but they are going to get in touch with me tonight to properly talk it through, and I will let you know what's going on when everything has been decided!

Sorry Rosalind that you felt that you had to apologies for offending the K9 group, I certainly feel that this letter was not nessesary, I had tears in my eyes as I read your posts and all the attacks in this very difficult time I would have thought that K9's were here to support and not condemn.

I bought a 6 month old puppy from a K9 person for £300 6 weeks ago, she wanted £450 for her, I didn't have that much spare at that time and we both felt that as she was getting an excellent home it was more important than getting all her outlay back. By asking for that amount , the buyer would really have to think about whether they really wanted the pup, anything less and some unscrumpulous person could sell the pup on again and make a profit.

The breeder I bought Willow from took pups back from owners (in fact insisted that she had them back and we were not allowed to find a good home ourselves) if there was a problem and they were not able to keep themand then sold them on again we were offered 6 month old whippets for £300, what's the difference.

I am a p.C counsellor and have witnessed all this type of attacks on counselling courses I have been on, it seems to be attack first and then find out the reasons later.

Good luck to Byrom and yourself and I hope your little girl gets her confidence back in time as your only pet. You were very brave to post what you did and came to the place where you would get sound advice on a major issue and hopefully your pup would get an offer of of a great home with whippet lovers.

Imagine if greyhound owners started to sell non-runners, it wouldnt happen!

We pay hefty prices for good quality racer pups, and if they end up being fighters, non-chasers or injured we either keep them as pets or rehome them (often costing us money!)

I have rehomed a few of my ex racers over the past 15 years and if added the total purchase price of these dogs i would be living in the Carribean.

Money is a difficult subject and is a big issue. We hopefully intend to start breeding in a couple of years with both our whippets and greyhounds. Dog breeding is a business and a lot of breeders are business like and do know what price to put on their dogs heads, but ultimately all with the exception of a few whippet breeders i have met care about the dogs welfare more than anything and charge what they think their dogs are worth.

As mentioned before this is all about Byron, not why he cant stay etc, so i hope he soon settles in his new home and we still get to see pics of him if he's living with a K9'er

Ooooh it's all a bit tense in here!

I think if Byron has (hopefully!) got a new home, and Clara is settled, and Daisy is healing, then maybe we should all take a step back. We each have our opinions and viewpoints, nothing will change that, so maybe there's no more to be said on the subject. Rosalind has said herself she regrets some of her wording, and although Scott evidently feels angry I am sure he and Rosalind can sort out their differences privately without our help.

Perhaps Rosalind has learned a bit about wording and tact today, and here's hoping that everything turns out OK for the dogs concerned. Good luck to all involved :luck:

:luck: :luck: I hope you have found a k9 home for Byron as it'll help cos you'll be able to watch him grow :luck: :luck:
