 Hi everyone, i was just wondering if anyone out there had only one whippet ? we got our first whippet Winnie 4 weeks ago and everyone keeps saying why have we only got one ?? are whippets ok on their own ? other peoples advice would be appreciated, thank you. ps winnie is an angel, so loving and she adores lots of kisses :))

Whippets are ok on their own and you should take the time to enjoy Winnie for a while .

It's just that they do tend to be addictive and sooner or later most people end up with more .

While watching my two young whippets running on the beach this morning I was just thinking there's nothing nicer than to watch whippets running together :D

I only have one whippet....He is 2 and a half and as happy as larry.....although have to admit that a number 2 would be lovely!!

p.s He does have lots of whippet friends to run with.

I only ever had one whippet for years...my first whippet Lady who lived to the ripe old age of 17 and spoiled and loved

......used to race her too, and she seemed to enjoy life as an only whippet.

When I married we had another only whippet as such...Chip, another happy lad brought up with my children ..he lived till

he was 12 and a half.

When Chip went to the bridge I went 8 months without a dog at all....and now I have 4 whippets,...it just happened...

I love having mutliple whippets....but looking back I saw nothing wrong with having only one whippet either...they love human

company as well as other whippets... :huggles:

I only had one whippet for over 3 years, I now have 2...1 was great, 2 is great!!!

lol hmmmmm i have 12 at the moment, including the 6 pups of course ;) x

i only had one whippet for about 3 years(she had feline company) after persueding the OH getting me another...although ive lost peggy last year we now still have two(got a 10 mth old whippy and Bow is almost 6

i would love to have another but having a young family, think we'l stick with the two..for the moment

i know a few people who just have the one and they get on great..yes they are addictive but at the same time cost money to keep

although having more than one, they have company but not always play together..Bow is fixed on her ball when out and about where Lucy just wants to play with any dog she comes arcross, and have many doggie friends

But its great to see them cuddle up together

How did that happen ? Sorry was posting on a different topic how on earth did it end up here ? Nothing to do with this topic, sorry

I only have 1 whippet and she doesn't seem to mind, infact I am not totally sure she would want to split all of the attention she gets with another. However I have to say I would not mind a second (Once the first is a little older and calmer though :teehee: ).

I have one whippet and a toy poodle well hes my daughters and she lives with us :D they get on great together but i would love another whippet :-

I only have one and she seems very happy as an only. She does have four cats for company though. She gets plenty of plays with dog friends and seems to prefer other breeds to play with - perhaps because the first time she met another whippet (apart from her own family) it nipped her on the nose and now she is a bit careful with them. Sad that. I am at home with her all day which perhaps makes a difference to her need for other company, I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home.

Ash was my first whippet and he overlapped with my old Jack Russel, Billy, who I had for 15 years. Unfortunately when I lost Billy Ash pined for him in the house and when I took hik out he walked to heel (even off lead) without being asked. He just wouldn't leave my side. Hector is my rescue and he and Ash are the best of mates. I think in asnswer to your question, one whippet is fine as long as they are loved as a whippet ie. plenty of exercise and social interaction. I have to admit we are so tempted to have another one!

thank you everyone, Winnie is so adorable i can see why people get more !! she just cries a bit when i leave the room and she seems to favour me over the rest of the family, is that normal ? its my first whippet so im not sure. the breeder told me that my whippet might get seperation anxiety as i only bought the one whippet so im a little worried, winnie does not like being left on her own if we have to go out at all, she vries for a while but usually goes to sleep. She is so happy the rest of the time, she has a mad half hour in the evening running around and jumping on the furniture its so funny then she sleeps most of the day and most of the night !! is this normal for whippets ? thanks for everyones advice its much appreciated xxxxxxxx

I think there is much more people on here that have more than one than just the one whippet or dog but we only have the one too. We are a one dog house hold and always will be until I move out of my parents house. I think its fine just having the one but each dog and person is different. Penny is on her own and is very happy and never looks like she would benefit from company. She has a great life and gets to come lots of different places with us when we go out for the day and visit people which might not be as possible if we had more than one. She enjoys meeting other dogs and having a wild play now and then but doesn't thrive on that.

If we were to have got another whippet it would need to have been done years ago as Penny is now 7 and a half and I don't think she would like it now as she has never had to share her house and has had all the love and attention to herself, she looks so relaxed in the house I would hate to spoil that for her now. Also for me because I have had her on her own for so many years she is our special little family member I just can't imagine loving another as much as her lol even though in time I probably would! I think it is really down to personal preference and circumstances but for me Penny copes perfectly fine on her own and is a very happy whippet :)

With one whippet there is a little more tendancy towards separation anxiety but I think this is the same with any dog. Establish you routine from the begining and Winnie will be fine.

Mae has always been on her own and I went back to full time work after only having her a week, strangely enough because she has always been left she has no problems when I leave the house. I live in a terrace and my neighbours are in all day, they have said you never hear a peep and sometimes when I get in it is like she can hardly be bothered to get out of bed to great me. However if I am in the house and try to shut her in another room, even the one she stays in when I am at work you would have thought she was in terrible pain. They are funny creatures and I think if you are there they just want to be with you, but a whippet on its own can certainly cope with being left.

Just follow the same routine each time you go out, leave her a kong or something to keep her mind off you absence and don't say goodbye or make any fuss of her before you go, make it seem as normal as possble. The more relaxed you are when you leave the better she will be, they are very bright do learn the routine quickly.

I started with one (Jinny) and she was, and still is, my heart dog

.......... but another 5 whippets and 5 lurchers have followed in addition to the 2 GSDs who were already here when Jinny arrived  and that isn't counting the foster dogs at the moment, of which there are 3 (w00t)

on the other hand...my first whippet (who has the company of Daisy who is a Tibetan Spaniel) was perfect when left at home alone...but now I have 2, and number 2 has settled in (!!!) they have taken to trashing the place whilst I'm out...My son has visions of them doing the wall of death at regular intervals whilst I'm at work, including the table, desk and sideboard in their antics!!!

All a lovely sign though of them feeling happy and at ease!!! :clown: (w00t)

We have just one, Ella, actually she looks very much like yours ! She is such a lazy, sleepy madam, she goes to work in the lorry with my OH and sleeps on the bed in the lorry, I just had a week off work with flu like symptoms and saw she was happy sleeping in her bean bag all day !

She is a real scardy cat with other dogs I can't imagine her being invaded by a second whippet, I'd hate to see her being bossed about if she wasn't the top dog. Mind you, not all of us humans want to be leaders so maybe she'd be happy to be led.

It's easier to go on holiday etc when you're only asking friends to mind one dog.

Ella likes her brother coming to stay when his family goes abroad, pines for him after he's gone but then gets back to normal.

I think they're all different personalities and therefore you never know what you're going to get, we've been extremely lucky I can leave anything out with her at home alone and she won't touch it.......except for chocolate, she'll nose that out your bag given half a chance so I never risk it !

Enjoy her all to yourself I say .
