Hello pet insurance policy holders,

I just received a lovley policy renewal letter today from Sainsbury's Bank pet insurance who have increased my annual premiums for two whippets (aged 6 and 4 years) by over 30% each! When I called to find out why, Sainsbury's Bank stated:

1. inflation which they had to pass onto the policy holder

&

2. whippets are more prone to illness and injury than other breeds!

Outrageous!

The monthly cost to insure both whippets is £67.67! They are both 100% healthy and have no pre-existing conditions.

So I was just wondering what everyone else was paying. Sainsbury's Bank has a £50 excess per claim and covers up to £6,500 per illness providing your pet is under 9 years old after that you might want to think about remortgaging.

I just got a quote from More Than who can insure both dogs for £34.48 a month and cover up to £7,000.00 per claim (with a £70 excess).

I think most insurance companies whack up the premium after thay have lured you in. Just ensure the accidental vet cover is a good few thousand- I made that mistake!

My Mum uses Morethan and they have been very good with a claim she has just made.

What a load of old codswallop! Whippets more prone to illness and injury - that hasn't been my experience. Just an excuse to hike the premium.

Now, what you need to do is open a Mini Cash ISA, put your monthly premium in there by direct debit, and pretend it's not there. Then in no time at all you have a tidy sum that is there in case of emergencies. I started doing that 6 years ago when I moved from 3 dogs to 5. It was too expensive to insure 5 of them. I started off with £60 a month, and call it the dogs money. Occasionally they have amounted so much in their account that they have bought me something with it :p They are so kind o:)

i had a 8 month whippet with meningitis vet bill over 2 years £7000.00 first bill £3000.00 saving £60.00 a month would take 9 years you can not beat getting decent insurance and if your claim free shop around each year as far as whippets being prone to illness and injury i would say as far as injury is concerned i would say that was a fair claim you only have to read how many members post re injury

Halifax are offering good terms on their top life time cover

not that we have a dog yet so cant realy say anything but when we do get one hopefully in a couple of months, MORETHAN will be the first place we look, as we have car and home insurance with them and have had a claim on both since we got them. they are very good at getting things sorted and doing it quickly.

example. the tv ot knocked over and crack the screen. with in the space of about 3days we had a voucher for a new tv to the same value as the old.

obviasly the pet side of it will be different but form experiance on the car aand home side they have been great and there prices are pretty good to.

I agree Masta, but generally whippets are a healthy lot. There are so many clauses on these insurance policies though, you need to read all the small print. Once they get to the age when they're likely to be ill, you have to stump up a percetage yourself. Since I started saving 6 years ago, none of my 5 and now 6 whippets have been ill, apart from the odd minor visit to the vet, for which we paid from our current account, and didn't take from the dogs money. I always intended to take vaccination money from there too, but never took it as I couldn't be bothered to go into town. I now save £160 a month, but not necessarily because I think we might need it for the dogs - they just like to buy me things out of their money :teehee:

I suppose everyone's situation is different, and although we wouldn't have the sort of money to hand in the dog account that you paid in vets fees, we would be able to get the money easily enough.

Pet Insurance has it's place, but not for a muti-pet household IMO.

the saving idea is good but along side a good value lifetime policy for maybe the first 5 years were if the s$&"t hits the fan your covered i have 3 at the moment ranging from 6 months to 3 years for which im payin around £36.00 amonth and touch wood none have seen the vets since their jabs but i learnt a lesson with Kass 7k would have made a big hole in my bank account when it was shouldered by M&S whom i had only paid £30.00 when she was diaganosed with Mengingitis plus they paid me the full purchase price when she passed away the thing is we only moan about insurance when we have'nt claimed but beleive me it's a god sent when you have a problem

Mine are with M&S. they do life cover policies and a good level of vets fees - can't remember without looking. They paid out for Solomans claim of about £3,000 no problems at all. Monthly premiums are under £20 per dog. Would recommend them.

Direct Line increased my insurance cover for Fred to 30 pounds a month recently. I managed to renegotiate it to 27 pounds a month with a 70 pound excess (whooppee do  ). He's eleven now and I couldn't get a cheaper quote elsewhere. They've been quite good at paying out in the past...but wait until you have an older dog and have to make a claim....and it's impossible to find cheaper insurance if you switch

I think your More Than quote sounds good.

Eric is insured with Esure. £13 per month and very good coverage.

I think this is the best idea that quite a few racers adopt, especially as insurance companies wont touch dogs that race (in my experiance).

I dont know if this includes lure coursing and other pursuits.

Its lucky that humans can get insured regardless or I dont know where we would be

You're right there Garry they won't insure whippets that race - when we insured years ago I just didn't tell them  Well what they don't know doesn't hurt them does it  It wasn't like I told a lie, I just didn't mention it o:)

just stay away from E & L or Equine and Livestock. They are cheap but a nightmare when you claim. You have been warned

Cathie

Sounds like I have been ripped off - i've always been with Petplan for Merlin but I pay £34 a month just for him and he's not even 2 yet. The excess is £90 and it has lifetime illness cover. I've been meaning to shop around especially now I have 2, must admit Willow isn't insured at the moment since his free period ran out - must get onto it.

I used to insure my cat but when he got to about 8 the premium was so high and by the time you paid the excess and had to contribute so much towards the treatment it wasn't worth having. I stopped the insurance and saved the money each month in what I called the cat fund. Luckily he never needed it and lived to be 16 at which time he got a severe illness and needed to be PTS. Insurance is good but I do think there comes a stage as the animal ages when the premiums and excess get so ridiculous it's worth a re-think.

I would have a talk with PetPlan. It does sound a lot, but I expect you have really good cover. The only reason I am saying this is that imo PetPlan are very good. I had a horse claim and a horse trailer claim - no probs with them at all. I didn't go with them this time but think I will next year. The reason I didn't is because I was quoted £12.+ a month [prob not as good cover as yours] and so I took a Tesco at just under £9 a month. Foolishly I had overlooked the fact that Pet Plan only take Direct Debits over 10 months not 12 so it wasn't such a great difference.
