OMG thats bl***y awful, hope Fern makes a speedy recovery and neither dogs

are traumatised by this frightening ordeal.

It's a bad situation when someone has a dog on a lead and they can't even control it when it's on the lead :rant: When I was younger my friend always had Great dane's and they were all rescues. The last one was mental, he used to lunge at everyone as they passed by. I suppose you don't know what trauma he had been through before she got him, but he was only three :- " They seem to be a dog that get taken into rescues a lot. I always assumed it was because people bought them and didn't realise the upkeep they needed with food etc. Maybe there is a temperament issue as well?

Hi,Fern is stable at the moment,hoping for better news tomorrow.

Homer is still scared to go outside the door,but he's eating his food.

Will keep you posted,when i know more.

I used to breed Danes until I came to a conclusion that they are just too big. I also ended up having problems with aggression towards other dogs. However it was aggression that was provoked, as in those times (40-30 years ago) most dogs were allowed to roam free, and as I would walk with my dogs down the street we would get attacked by variety of small dogs. Sometimes my dogs were bitten and bled. I was strong enough to control two Danes, but it was a struggle when they were being nipped on their legs. It was not surprising that they became aggressive towards other dogs, but it meant I had to be very careful where to let them off the leash.

When we moved to acreage there were number of dogs roaming free, squeezing through my Dane-proof fences, and some got bit bashed up. None were seriously hurt, just badly bruised, but I decided i do not wish to be involved in a breed that has the capability to bite child's arm off in one snap, and the potential to kill another dog without any effort.

Nobody has the right to keep a dog they are incapable to control.

What an awful thing to have happened I do hope the owner of the great dane is paying the vet's bill. I have 6 dogs, 2 of which are large german shepherds - I always have them under full control and they are very obedient and well socialised. However, even I would not walk them where they could possibly meet other dogs unless I have an extra person with me. Not that I think they would hurt another dog, but if a strange dog were to come up to them and have a go I wouldn't blame them if they retaliated and I wouldn't like to be in that situation by myself (don't want to be in that situation at all!).
