He was asleep last night, so I sneaked off to play poker! The next thing I knew he'd made it up the stairs! :wub:

The specialist was very pleased with him on Friday, and still believes he'll make a complete recovery! It's just a very slow process! :b

He had a day out racing today to see his friends! :thumbsup:

how common is it for whippets to suffer spinal injuries

1) racing ?

2) coursing ?

3) playing together ?

4) playing with larger dogs - greyhounds, lurchers, etc ?

My dogs sometimes bump each other and injure a foreleg (knee joint?) but this has always cleared up after a day or so. They tumble each other on the ground and seem to be unhurt; it's scary to think this rough play might result in spinal injury

I wonder how Diesel is getting on now. This thread has given me great comfort as we had a similar accident at SPWRC yesterday, Vanna's mum's Xanthe slipped and fell approaching the bend, and could not get up again, seemed to have no feeling in her hind legs. Her vet has diagnosed possible spinal shock and thinks she will recover movement with rest and anti inflammatories. Annette reports that the vet was quite pleased with her progress overnight, though she cannot use her hind legs yet.

The good news is that there is hope. I thought I'd lost him but he's still improving day by day. It's a very slow process and you have to take each day as it comes but you'll see little things to encourage you.

Today I came back in after popping out for 10 mins and he was stood at the top of the stairs wagging his tail as if to say "look what I have done!"

only just seen this thread- how incredibly scary. Thank goodness Diesel is recovering. Nana had a terrifying somersault today running around with Tess- she was a long way away and took ages to get up- really really scary, but she did get up and is fine, can't imagine how I'd feel if she hadn't.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and support.

I phoned Mum last night. The vet saw Xanthe again yesterday and was pleased with her progress. There was a slight response from one leg when stimulated and a more marked one in the other leg. She is nt incontinent which means that signals are managing to go up and down the spinal cord and she is less panicky about the fact that she can't move around. All in all things aren't looking too bleak, but all we can do now is wait.

It's great to hear about Diesel - he's giving us hope.

it sounds as though Xanthe's responses are identical to Diesels, on his first day(sunday) at the vets he was very panicy at not being able to stand and there was no response whatsoever from his back legs, though he too could still go to the toilet.

The next day he had good responses in both legs, one slightly better than the other and he was much more relaxed.

by thursday he could just about manage to struggle to his feet and was home by saturday.

its been 5 weeks now since his accident but he continues to improve every day.

We will keep everything crossed and pray that Xanthe makes the same good recovery :luck: :luck: :luck:
