Has anyone ever traced their family tree? I am just going to start and am a bit overwhelmed by the number of sites available online. I wondered if anyone with experience has a favourite site they use. I am all ready with my pedigree form.

Jenny

Im sure Trishg will be able to give you some help

we tried to search back on my mums side, but her mum was adopted and we just got to a standstill :(

we are going to do my dad side soon

do you watch "who do you think you are".....i love that programme

I would love to, even though it does look so so confusing.

Unfortunately, one side of my family history is rather cloaked in mystery, so I doubt I would get very far, even if I did get my head around it all.

Good luck Jenny, you never know you might discover you are heiress to a fortune!!

Thanks Trish for the links, I did wonder about the cost of the certificates so I will bear that in mind. My grandad was a stud groom at Sandringham and I have some letters on Sandringham notepaper saying what a good chap he was as well as a photo of him with this huge shire stallion, and my grandma was in service at the age of 10, but I don't really know very much more.

I'll let you know Rachel if I become a heiress, I've always felt I could be from noble stock.

i found two second cousins on genesconnected and we shared info and photos, must say getting a photo as to be the best.

also you might be suprised at your relatives cause of their deaths,my G G Grandma died of a hernia aged 49 :( something easily treated now a days.

It's a fascinating hobby Jenny. I started tracing mine long before we had the internet and that involved making numerous trips up to London and to local records offices. I'm a bit stuck now on all sides as I've got back to the mid 19th century on most sides and it starts getting harder once you get back that far. It doesn't help that I have very common surnames (in Wales anyway) such as Thomas, Jones , Griffiths etc - makes it very hard. Good luck with it - it's fun and really interesting.

I have found Dawn's family tree

Look close and you can see the family likeness

 Richard!!!!!!!

Good luck Jenny. My dad's brother's wife  really wanted to do theirs. All was going well until they discovered a fair few secrets about my grandfather. Turns out he had a few more children (in a few countries) than the three they knew about (w00t)

ive thought about it and just ask the family...My fathers side is all past away so im stuck there...my mothers father died in the war and traced the family in malvern hes surname was a 'Harding' but should of been 'Ely'(long story)

Ive done more tracing back the whippets pedigrees than my own family

good luck

I love that programme too. I watched Fiona Bruce's episode this evening. I remember Patsy Kensit's episode too. The look of horror when she realised she was standing on one of her predecessors graves in church (it was under a rug) whilst she was chatting to the vicar, was priceless.

My brother has spent a number of years tracing our family tree. I descend from watchmakers in Coventry on my father's side, and from East Germany on my mother's. My great-grandfather owned a factory, a great uncle was major of the town, and the remaining brother a well known academic at the time. Funny how things turn out :-

I have had great success tracing my dads and have got some way with it. Struggling with my mums though. Good sites mentioned by trishg. I also use ancestory.co.uk. Also part of the 1911 census is online now as well.

HI JENNY, I MYSELF AM JUST GETTING "HOOKED " ON FINDING MY ROOTS, TRY THE ROOTSWEBCONNECTPROJECT A WONDERFUL PLACE FOR STARTING AND ANOTHER ONE IS FAMILY SEARCH.ORG from the church of latter day saints GOOD LUCK :clown:

A bunch of us have worked on different bits of my family's, but I haven't done much of it in years, as a biographer I'm always too busy doing someone elses! I'd highly recommend RootsChat.com though ... lots of help and advice from the very experienced family researcher freely given to the less experienced ... and many folk will do census look ups for you, or even look up things in record offices for you if they are going to be there anyway ... one lovely lady at the other end of the country who I have never met has looked up masses of stuff for me on a 'what goes around comes around' basis.

Ive just been doing my husbands side, as mine is already done as far as we can go. I managed to get it back to the 1600's and its so interesting the things you find out - mine was a shocker as we found out my Grandad had a complete 'other' secret family !!

Apart from working your way through the census on sites like findmypast - Genes Reunited was great, as it will bring up other people's trees who match yours and you can compare notes. I paid for find my past, but was a free member on Genes. Ive wasted lots of credits on searches that were wrong though, especially on the newly released 1911 census they charge you lots of credits to view the records!

Good luck with it!

I've always wanted to do it....I may take a look at some of the websites. It will give me something to do when I'm bored at work (I meant, in my lunchbreak) :p

Good luck with the searches.

Hi Jenny,

I have been doing my family tree for a couple of years now and have got back to 1684 on one line on my mother's side.

Family Search is a webpage run by the Mormons and is all free of charge.

I am a member of Ancestry and i've been with them a couple of years and i've got loads of info from them.

I have to warn you - it's very addictive and can be extremely frustrating at times.

Good Luck

Deb

I started on it last year, i got quite far with my mums mums side, just by googling there names (w00t)

turns out my great grannys family were all in the circus :clown:

my great granny was a clown and her father worked with the elephants (w00t) and his father was a lion tamer :sweating:

its really really interseting what you find, but got a bit stumped when i started looking my dads side.

will check out some of these links later maybe start it up again

good luck jenny :luck: :luck:
