poor moss,i hope he makes a quick recovery.as an owner of dobes for over 30 years can i say not all dobies are like this.however,if the dog is a stud dog they do tend to be aggressive towards other males, rather like stallions.that is one reason why they should not be off the lead at a dog show.any owner knows his dogs temperament so he has learned the hard way to keep his dog on a lead.the 160 pounds vet bill should hopefully make him think twice.poor moss has paid the price for this mans stupidity.i was at a terrier show once and a cairn terrier attacked my manchester terrier,i put my arm out to protect my dog and it bit me on the arm.the woman owner didnt even apologise to me
Kris I could understand it a bit better if it had of been a male dog and used at stud, but this was a bitch and a young one too and incidently Moss is a neuter and extremely friendly towards other dogs (or at least he used to be! )and certainly no threat to anyone or anything!!

I know accidents do happen, but I truly believe that this guy surely must have known that his dog had a tendency to be aggressive towards other dogs as she certainly seemed to know exactly what it was she was doing,I mean she bolted towards our dogs, who were on leads, and just grabbed Moss our dogs were'nt even doing anything at the time and there was no-one else about to have startled her? Inside the building at the show later on he did say to me that he had been trying to stack her with no lead on  and that when he saw Ryan & our dogs that he tried to put her on the lead as she can be a bit "funny" and I did reply to him that if he knew she was a bit "funny" he should'nt have her off the lead at any time at all.

BTW I am not stating that Dobes are nasty (as I know a few people who have them, and in fact there are two at our ringcraft and they have lovely temps) it just so happens that it was a Dobe that attaked Moss and this one was nasty.

if this was a bitch then i fail to see what excuse could be made for her behaviour. (sorry but i thought it was a male,so maybe it was a male stud being bolshy with another male) :b

after seeing pics of poor moss's injuries which are horrific im just glad the outcome isnt worse as it so easily could have been.if he knew his bitch could be a 'bit funny' what the hell was he doing letting her off the lead?what an idiot. i hate seeing pics of whippies that have been attacked by other breeds.its so upsetting as they are one of the least offensive, most gentle, sweet natured breeds i know.(daughter has 5 of them living with us in our house, and if anything like this ever hapened to any of them i think id be up on a murder charge!)give moss a big hug and a kiss from me and i do so hope hes better soon. :huggles: :luck:  :)

Thanks very much Kris,Moss is very happy that he has so many lovely well wishers :D

And YES Ryan my husband, was very nearly up on a GBH charge I tell you he really "lost it" only for the fact that he had the dogs on the leads and was trying to see how Moss was I honestly believe he would've been up on an assault charge!

Owww, poor little chap.

We had a similar experience a couple of years ago with a Dalmatian - managed to get hold of two of my boys. Ripped Archie's shoulder apart, and then grabbed Reg hold by the neck leaving two deep puncture wounds. The guy coughed up with the vet's bill and actually had the dog destroyed as it was not the first time it had carried out such a vicious attack. Unfortunately, not all owners are so understanding.

I still chat to the guy these days, he has another dog now, a longhaired GSD, and she is a real sweetie. She and Stan play for hours!

Physically, all healed very well, but mentally, poor Archie has never been quite the same since.

What a horrid experience for poor Moss  I know how hideous it is when your dog get mauled - those few minutes feel like a lifetime & coping with other dogs while your trying to save the victim is pretty awful :( . Give Moss a big hug from us here at Shenace - hope he's feeling a bit better each day and I hope it doesn't scar his personality. One of my girls who was attacked for absolutely no reason is petrified of the breed that "got" her - you can see it in her eyes, it breaks your heart.

That is what worries me the most! Moss has always been a very outgoing dog and loves all other dogs, when he was quite a young pup he did get a bit of a scare from two rather boisterous GSD's but they were'nt aggressive just playing and for ages after that he was terrified of the breed, but he did come around but he was young then, as he is seven now I am just hoping that this has'nt affected his personality.............I suppose only time will tell.

Thanks again for everyones concern. ;)

Was going to ask for an update on Moss, hope he is feeling a bit better :huggles: :huggles:

Just want to wish Moss the very best :huggles: for a speedy recovery. wHAT HAS HAPPENED IS DREADFUL. :(

I know all to well what its like when a dog is attacked like this - my poor Chip was attacked in the year 2000 by a staffy cross and had 18 stiches down his ribcage, a punctured lung and several ops. :(

They are very resilliant dogs and its amazing just how well they can recover - Chip was 8 when it happened and he lived another 4 years after that. Although because of the lung damage he was always much slower.

I ALWAYS BLAME THE OWNERS NOT THE DOGS.

I just hope Moss gets well as soon as possible and dosnt have any lasting effects. Good LUCK :luck: :luck:

Cant think why , but only just spotted this thread

(w00t) Poor Moss :( those injuries look horrendous (w00t) The Dobe really meant buisiness didnt she  . Who would want to own a dog like that ?!

Whippets are really quick healers fortuantely , My mollee had a chunk ripped out of her when she was 10 months with 15 stistches  ,thats was by a stray dogs who disapeard as quick as it came  you can still see the scar enearly 9 years on , but it didnt stop her winning in the show ring :- "

:huggles: To Moss

Hope Moss makes a good recovery. He may well not like Dobes near him in future and need careful resocialising.

Goodness me what a mess the dobe has made of moss lots of hugs! At least the owner payed up but i cant understand why he would even consider staying at the show let alone showing it beggars belife!

would love to know how moss is doing now.

any news

Only just caught up with this thread as I haven't been online much.

Really sorry to hear what happened to Moss - I thought Gelert's throat tear was bad enough and that was only 4 stitches. It's terrifying and completely sickening seeing open wounds like that.

Hope it's healing well and that the scarring isn't too bad :luck: Gelert's chin scar is virtually unnoticable now, but the scars from the puncture marks around his eyes are still visible, thank Heaven he's brindle really.

That was my fear too, but it does not seem to have affected how Gelert reacts to other dogs at all. We've met many labs since his attack, and he hasn't reacted at all, even to a snarling one that tried to take an agressive leap at him; he just averted its stare and carried on walking. The emergency treatment has now made him a bit anxious about vets, but the weekly visits following on from the toe break has provided a good deal of 'aversion therapy' and he's been quite good whilst having all the various plasters and bandages removed and replaced. Moss sounds a sensible and well-balanced dog, so hopefully he'll get over the emotional trauma well too.

Bit of an update on Moss.............he is doing remakably well considering, although I have noticed that he has very red bruising along his sheath but there are no puncture wounds there, thank goodness! He is still on the anti-b's and is still quite tender (only to be expected) and quite quiet in himself but I suppose it will take a fair bit of time to heal.I know from experience that Whippets do tend to heal quickly and he is'nt a "silly" dog soI have my fingers crossed for a full recovery.

Here are some pics taken this evening:

Here is another,as you can see from the previous pic he likes the sofa :D Had to prise him off it for this one!! (w00t)

I,like everyone else was very sorry to read of Moss's attack and hope for a quick recovery. Best of luck to you. :luck:

owwwwww, that looks sore :( poor little man, lots of tender hugs and kisses :huggles: and being spoilt rotten for some time methinks

Poor Moss!!!

I hope the owner of the Dobe learnt a very big lesson from this.

Shame there isn't some where that advertises these attacks & the damage that they cause. It might make some of these owners more responsible. I am glad that the owner did stay around and try to help you & poor Moss. It looks like he was very lucky the vets bill wasn't a lot more!!

Hope the wound isn't too sore for Moss & he recovers quickly.

All our love & very gentle cuddles

Pam, get some Arnica cream for the places where there is bruising but no broken skin. You will be amazed how quickly the bruising will go if applied twice a day but DON'T apply to broken skin, it will inflame it! Aloe Vera gel on the sutured areas will aid healing. :huggles: to Moss
