Lamping Man, I am sorry to hear your vet has worried you. Like Mark said if the puppies are quiet and contented they are fine........... hungry puppies cry and do not settle.
In 18 years, I have bred 23 litters and lost count of the whelpings I have helped deliever. Local canine midwife
Firstly a bitches milk does not come in until about day 3, until that time she is producing colostrum, this contains all the antibodies etc that give the pups a good start in life. Once the milk comes in proper you will know; if you sit watching them feed they will plummel away at the teats often making a moaning noise, then all of a suddenly they will all start gulping, the milks arrrived!. After a while the pup will move away until its hungry again. The best bit's when they are all a bit older, once they have all finished on one teat they all do a big scramble for another, a bit like a rugby scrumble LOL
I always weigh my pups daily and at the same time of day from birth for the first week or two. On avarage they put on a quarter of an ounce up to an ounce a day. This is best done at first when mums out for a wee so she doesn't get distressed but she will settle in a few days. Weighing them this way you know they are gaining weight, and any loss of weight is a cause for concern. Plus it also helps the puppies get used to being handled and know the smell of you. (the only sence thats working at this age)
All the best with you puppies and most of all enjoy them. The time passes to fast !
Wendy.
