Ticks****** Shudders******

:x :x :x

I feel sick!

Dermot had one years ago - we burnt it off and then put TCP where it had been.

URGH! Why do these things EXIST!???? :x :x :x

The little B*st*rd was chasing cows on the common Estelle, that long grass is giving me the heeby jeebies now :(

Sorry Joanna but PMSL at your huge tick pictures!! (w00t)

Mine have picked up the odd one before now (mostly last year) and I frontline them because I haven't got a big camera to examine the mouth parts with!! :D

Yep it looks like you got it all. I'm in Australia but they look pretty similar. Can they kill your dogs over there? We have paralysis ticks in some parts of Australia & they are awful, they can kill dogs, people, they're really bad. Thankfully none of them in the area I'm in now.

I think the stories about them re growing bodies are myths though. If you leave the heads in they can become infected & the paralysis ticks can keep on paralysing even after the body is removed.

When I lived in Queensland they were bad on my horse. They're the only living thing I have deliberately tortured. I used to yank them off, put them in a jar, take them home & put them on the kitchen sink. I then poured metho on them & set them on fire. Die you bastards die!!!

Linda

(w00t) (w00t) How did you manage to take those pictures Joanna :x and what with ??

Arnt they just great !!! Thanks for the photos , Id love to have come round and squished it for you  I dont think leaving them on till they drop off is a good idea as it can make the dog anemic (sp) if it ha s alot of them , In between the toes can make their feet very sore too :(

Lesley , you said` what a full and exciting life ive led` , ,, is it over then ??

Please say that ive more life yet to come (w00t)  o:)

I think ther are some Ticks on the continent that are fatal to dogs , :nuke: (w00t) Lets hope they stay over their too ;)

I'm glad you got rid of it too, for the dog's benefit for one and also so you can't put any more disgusting pictures on !!!

:x :x :x we used to get ticks when we race the huskys in the forest. I just shudder thinking about the little fat blood sucking things :x

Jax....were you evil as a child? :- " ....or did you not have a tv ;) lol.

We use bio spot now I sell loads of it this time of year as one packet does a dog for a whole year.

Yep - looks like you got the whole thing. Did you squish it as instructed? (w00t) :D

I LOVE squishing ticks :b

Forgot to say that Archie might have a runny bum for a day or so - mine sometimes do. Infact if they have one for no reason I look for a tick and normally find one

Give Archie a big kiss from Star :* - poor thhing having his first tick.

That is some camera :D

God! You squeamish lot!! How can you get so girlie owning dogs for goodness sake!! I'm with Jax, just twist them off (without tweezers) and then squish them, same as fleas!! You tend to get more ticks in areas where you have deer, sheep and sometimes cattle (more often lice with cattle) and, of course, bloody hedgehogs carry ticks and fleas!! But they are just all part and parcel of the joys of owning dogs.

However, I would never burn off ticks cos you could easily burn the dog and if you do leave the head in the body will not re-grow but it will probably cause a cyst which will be full of PUS!!!!!

Yeah we just yank them out, but what does help is to spray a bit of garlic juice on them first, this seems to loosen their grip then yank them out and jump on them!!! (w00t) Or burn them! (w00t)

Its funny cos the deerhound and border terrorist seem to get a lot but the whippets have never had a tick. I always reckon its because of their super-shiny coats the ticks find it harder to get a grip  Anyway not going to moan!

Hope Archie has recovered from his trauma. or rather yours Jo!

(w00t) This thread reminds me of when my old boy had a tick on his undercarriage, so we pulled and puffed to get this damn thing off.

o:) Poor man he was so patient, until.........

:x we realised that we had been trying to pull off one of his nipples :x

Poor Archie :(

That's the first time I have ever seen one, how gross.

Kirsty

I am quite sure ticks cannot regrow their body, nor do they grow to the size of chestnuts. When hungry they are tiny, size of a pin head, when fed they may be almost 1/4 of inch(?). But there are many different ticks around the world and many transfer some very unpleasant diseases to both humans and dogs. Ehrlichiosis and Borreliosis (Lyme diseas) are just couple.

Paralytic ticks are another even more frightening variety. When i lived in Sydney and further north I would check my dogs twice a day. That meant to feel all over all my dogs every inch of their body including inside their ears and between their toes, and remove any ticks. The dogs loved it.

I used to burn any ticks I found, as their blood contains the diseases which the tick carries, so it not a good idea to come in contact with it.
